ADVICE needed, 1990 legacy ?s

Post by tekanime »

OK, I really want to buy this 5spd 1990 legacy ls, but I don't know anything about subarus, except that they kick alotta ass! The car has 214k on it so basically I'm gonna fix it up real nice exactly how I like it. I have $3k to sink into it right off the bat. I think that should get me pretty far. Can someone tell me some possible engine swaps (that range from simple to moderate? A nice low mileage JDM engine would be perfect, but I don't know which ones are easy and which ones are too hard. My goal is to have 250hp, is that reasonable?
ANY links to websites, trusted performance dealers are VERY appreciated.

If you want a powerful early 90's Subaru. Look for a Subaru Legacy Sport Sedan. They made them from 91-94 (I knew that  ). These are very well made with every option imaginable for the early 90's. 4-wheel Anti-lock, power everything, and to top it all off a TURBOcharged engine. No engine swap needed, you can rebuild it if necessary and it will easily top 300 horse with way less than $3000 worth of mods (man, i love turbos!). The suspension is excellent even in stock form and the vented brakes still dwarf sizes on most cars today.

The only thing is that you have to really look around to find one, for they are very rare. Expect to drop around $4000 to buy one (flawless, they want more). Most are gonna have a lot of miles, but you seem willing to fix it up. Oh, and did I mention that many many parts are interchangeable with the WRX? (seats, drivetrain, chassis, engine, ...) I finally got mine and plan on keeping it forever.

It is a 2.2L, 160some HP, non intercooled turbo. The nice thing is pretty much all the WRX stuff bolts right on. Turbo, downpipe, headers, ect.

165 hp at 5500 rpm and 181 lb/ft. of torque at 2800 rpm! The torque is important because you have so much so low on the rpms that the car outpulls other vehicles with 200+ hp.
