So long beep beep, Welcome HONK HOOOOOOOOONK !!

Post by morgie »

This morning went in a Take-appart yard looking for hoses to install my intercooler...

in the process, i saw good old Chevy Caprice 1982-1985, and decided to take a look at them.... noticed in the right fender a nice set of horns... "humm why not" so I took them and installed them in the legacy ... WOW !!! now my leg sounds like a big Caddy ! hahaha they are very powerfull :) now i will be heard when i push on the horns :)

they are a little rusted, i'll have to clean them someday... :\

Hmmm...I was just at a pick 'n pull this afternoon. They didn't have any domestics though. I'll have to check into this.

Yeah, stock Subaru horns are pathetically wimpy, to the point of being unsafe in my opinion. I went to a junkyard and got three horns, one from some kind of mid-80s Buick, one from a late 80s Crown Vic, and one from an early 80s Caprice. These horns in parallel are quite good. :)

Those Hellas are nice, but I got all three of my old American iron horns for $6 total. :)

If I had extra money for the Supertones I'd probably get them... But air horns are really nice too. I put Fiamm air horns in my old '84 Mercedes 300D. They were quite impressive, but I guess I should have used shorter tubing from the air compressor to the horns; there was about a half second delay between when I hit the horn and the air horns sounded. I ended up making use of it, though. I put them in parallel with the stock horn, so a little tap on the horn button would be a fairly tame "beep" but if I held it down I'd get a road-clearing fanfare. :)

Great story about air horns. Mate of mine some years back decided to put triple 'trumpet style' air horns into a Ford Escort (UK Mark 1 for those who know). Being a bit of a klutz when it came to DIY he nonetheless decided to install them himself.

There wasn't a lot of space under the bonnet (hood) so he mounted them on their bases instead of flat. This would probably have been fine but the open end of the trumpets was pointing vertically up.

Also, he used FAR too much hose so after he'd been back into the house for a coffee when it started to rain we eventually gathered round for the first try.

You guessed it - the trumpets had filled up with water. After a delay of some twenty or thirty seconds the sound that emanated from under the bonnet was that of three guys gargling with mouthwash...

Hahaha... that's really funny.

I never exactly figured out the best orientation for those trumpets to get the sound to go forward. I eventually settled on having the trumpet pointed forwards, but I don't fully understand the harmonics. I remember when I used to play handbells that the sound actually traveled parallel to the plane of the lip, but a bell and a trumpet are very different things.
