Upgrading Fuel Delivery System...

Post by adamarchibald »

Ok guys I have some questions. This Thursday I will be starting to
upgrade my fuel delivery system. I am doing this because I will be
placing a larger turbo in the car and increasing the boost past 13
psi. I
am also under the impression that with the car over boosted to 13
psi the
stock fuel pump is too small and the car is already running lean.
Here is
what I
am considering for Thursday.

Holley 255 High Pressure Fuel Pump.
AEM Fuel Pressure Regulator.

Later down the road....
550cc injectors.
Engine management system.
Bigger turbo :)

Once the new parts are in the car, it will then take some runs on the
dyno. I will be placing the fuse into the FWD/AWD slot in the engine
bay as the dyno is not AWD. Has anyone run their car on the dyno
using
this FWD trick? What size fuse should I use?

So let me have it!

Current mods on the car so you know background.
STI engine mounts
IC off 95 WRX
2.5' Custom exhaust with 2.5' down pipe, high flow cat, reactive
muffler
Boosted to 13psi, Autometer boost guage.
KYB struts with Whiteline Legacy Select Springs
K&N filter (wow feel the power :P ) with 'snorkus' removed
17' primax rims covered in Falcon GBR tires.
and yes it is still a crappy auto :(

Adam - would love to see some pics of the IC install, and a brief description of what is/was involved...I ahve the parts here, jsut getting around to doing it!

As for your selected parts, sound good to me, and should give you some extra breathing room...you may want a SAFR or SAFC as well to lean things out a bit, as that pump will be giving you loads of fuel under load (flows alot more than than stock, which I think is around 136 liters per hour, vs the Holley at 255 liters per hour).

Not sure why you need/want the fuel pressure regulator at this point...I think the stoick one can bypass enough gas at your current level of mods

For injectors, remember it comes down to how much turbo you are putting in....550cc is alot of fuel injector ...talking VF22 terriritory, if not T3/T4

Adam,

Sounds like you have a good plan layed out.

The FWD fuse trick does work. I believe Rod has done this when tweakin the hell out of his legacy wagon.

Any fuse will work.

good to hear :) Do you happen to know if it give 'valid' HP
numbers? Or is tones lost when using the FWD fuse? My other
question is people have refered to 'rising rate fuel regulator' are
they the same thing as a fuel pressure regulator? If not what is the
differences and applications? Anyone have a ball park number of how
much boost the engine can handle? I've heard 21psi. Is that day to
day driving or just a new hours at the track?

Upgrading Fuel Delivery System...

Post by Z1Auto@aol.com »

Adam - a rising rate fuel pressure regulator (or RRFPR) is the same thing as a fuel pressure regulator. Basically what it does is recieve a vaccum line from the intake manifold (or something between the turbo and throttle body), and increases fuel presure based upon how much motive manifold pressure (aka boost) it sees. The needed fuel gets put through the injectors, extra unused fuel gets bypassed back to the tank via the return line. Your Legacy has a stock fuel pressure regualtor that gives 1 psi of fuel for every 1 psi of bosot it sees. The problem becomes when installing a larger than stock fuel pump, your base pressure (at idle) can often become higher than factory spec, as the stock regulator is not able to bypass enough of the extra fuel back to the tank via the return line. I ahve yet to see this on a stock Subaru turbocharged (Legacy or WRX) fuel pressure regulator. You always want
If you do get to the point with your car that the stock fuel pressure is higher at idle than factory specs, only replace it with an adjsutable 1:1 regulator...you do not want a 2;1 or higher like a Vortech, etc for a factory turbocharged car

HP numbers would mean something......however you will prob get different
numbers if you went on an AWD dyno though.

Upgrading Fuel Delivery System...

I think the boost limit depends a lot on what ever else you want to
do to the engine. We have a EJ22t that is going to be replaced anyway
and it is noe over 30lbs boost 370hp and it will not give up.
(Intercooled and tons of fuel)
AL(CO)
