Adam,
First off I can tell ya I have talked with Dale Teague and has tried H&R springs......couldn't get a correct fitment......If you can get spring rates from them, I think you could do a little comparing to what I posted on i-club about the stock spring rates and see if they would produce results you would like.
As for the fitment of struts, springs etc. Here it goes.....everything that I know as of now.
90-94 front struts/springs on all legacies, AWD/FWD, auto/manual, turbo/non-turbo are interchangeable. They will fit and are swapable. I believe even some of the newer springs/struts from the second gen would physically fit as well. The only issue would be spring rates.....AWD/FWD rates are goin to be different as well as turbo/non-turbo.
Rears.....now that's where everything get's mucked up.
1990-1991 rear springs are tapered at the top compared to the 1992+ models. Inner diameter of the top portion of the 90-91 rear springs is about 90mm. The bottom portion is about 138mm ID. The 1992-1994 models the rear springs, the inner diameter of the top is about 120mm, bottom portion is about 140mm ID.
The question I have is, can we just get a top mount from a 92-94 legacy and fit it in the 90-91 legacy? That is the $100 question. I'm hoping ciper can answer this. Adam I think he was goin to contact you about getting the sti top mounts, and giving them a shot? If that works, then we know the wider top mounts will fit up in there and you can use the fatter springs from 92-94.
Struts, there's three main things about the struts. The mounting location (comes into play for AWD/FWD), body height of the strut (again comes into play with AWD/FWD, and possibly sedan/wagon), and finally perch location, i.e. how far up the body of the strut is the perch mounted.
The mounting location onto the car. The AWD cars have the mounting location of the strut onto the spindle set back a little bit from the axle. It is also raised up slightly. By how much.....I'm not exactly sure.
Body height of the strut. I have been told from Dale Teague that the body of the AWD rear struts vs. the FWD rear struts is shorter. I don't think this really is an issue with sedan vs. wagon....but it's possible.
Perch location, the whiteline rep mentioned this and it make sense, if it is raised or lowered in comparison to the stock struts or wagon vs sedan.....you could be ultimately lowering the rear end or jacking it up.
What my theory or "HOPE" is.....Since the rear strut for the FWD cars is a tad longer then the rear strut for the AWD cars......."AND" the mounting location for the FWD cars is lower then the mounting location for the AWD cars that the difference surrounding the two will be negated and the strut perch will sit at the same position or height.......this is assuming the perch is mounted at the same spot.....relative to the top of the strut.
If this works out......and ciper finds out that the sti top mounts do fit in the rear of the 90-91 models.....I could get the wider springs for my car....and sti top mounts. Same goes for you too Adam. That would mean you would be able to fit stuff for a 92 legacy turbo wagon onto your 91.
So everything is hinging on what ciper finds out....hehehe
Hope this helps things.....sorry for my steer towards my FWD oddity subie
Josh

Subject: [BC-BFLegacyWorks] Leacgy suspension (again)
and to add insult to injury, H&R lists a spring for all 90-98 Leagcy's, AWD, except wagons! How am I to even start guessing which will actually fit the car?
