Removing Intake "Snorkus" from Leagacy Turbo.
I heard that taking out the Intake snorkus out of the fender will help
blow more air and make more sound. What does this part look like and
how do I remove it?
Thanks,
Mark

Removing Intake "Snorkus" from Leagacy Turbo.
Those intructions are right on to how I removed mine.
Some suggestions I would make is to not remove the
wheel. I didn't even have to fully remove the cover
on the inside of the cover nor did I even jack up the
car, though it would give you a little more room. The
clips for the cover are definetly not easy to get off
but will come off. Make sure and reset the ECU
correctly as I have heard that not doing so can cause
Check Engine lights to come on. The one other thing I
did was to remove the factory air filter box and where
the snorkus plugged in there is a rubber O-ring the
gave it a clean connection. It is only about two
inces in diameter so I cut it out to enlarge the hole.
It doesn't give it much more noise, mainly between
3-4K RPMs, but definetly seems to improve performance
a bit. Good luck.

Removing Intake "Snorkus" from Leagacy Turbo.
Q1:
Have Any kiwis/Aussies who drive jap-import EJ20T legacies performed this
procedure? Is it identical for our spec. Legacy?
At a casual glance my air intake/snorkus looks different from in the
pictures provided by Juice. Maybe because its a Forester?
BTW - I am now on a mission after driving Adrians (aka adriatic75) legacy
during the weekened my EJ20T touring wagon feels like a 1973 Holden
Kingswood in comparison. And so my upgrade journey begins in earnest.
Q2:
Does anyone out there have any tips for improving performance specific to
4-speed auto touring wagons? I know, I should have got a manual...
My number one pain is the autobox, I lose out on the engine braking that a
manual tranny provides to assist roadholding/braking, also it does not like
to be "manually" shifted through the gears. I do like the "manual" button
though on tight roads.
Number two is the handling, currently every little bump seems to rattle the
car (tyre pressure is OK tho) whereas at speed cornering is average at
best. I would like the opposite, eg smoother ride but better cornering.
Thanks in advance for any tips for a mechanical novice
cheers
Paul

I swear all our ears must burn at the same time.
Yesterday AM, I woke up, and my brotehr and I remvoed the silencer/snorjus thingy fro the fender well on my 91 Turbo..took all of 10 minutes to do, made slightly more noise with my K&N drop in filter, but nothing too big...a bit of a boost mid range though
Tomorrow is the day of truth...suspension goes in ! (Tein springs, Sti top mounts front and rear, and KYB's)..now I can make decent usage of the Yokohama A520's I have on there!

Removing Intake "Snorkus" from Leagacy Turbo.
Paul,
For the autobox, about the best thing I can suggest is to get the valve
body rebuilt, and put a shift kit in it. I'm going to be doin this next
week some time, and can let ya know how it turns out.
The manual button does nothing for performance. When depressed, the ECU
keeps the tranny from going into 1st gear, and the car starts off in 2nd
gear. This is supposed to help reduce torque to the wheels and reduce
wheel slip. This feature only works when the gear selector is
physically in the 3 or 2 position. When in 3, the tranny selects ONLY
between 2 & 3. When in 2, the tranny will stay in 2nd gear. When in
1st, it does nothing for the gear selection. The one press release I
have says it does make a more aggressive AWD map. So you may get 50/50
split all the time, rather then the normal 90/10 that the auto has.
Suspension.....what tires you have on the car? Size? Wheel size? Tire
pressure? Etc...
Josh

thanks Josh. Will be interested to hear how your shift kit turns out. My
girlfriends dad owns not 1 but 2 (!!!) Dodge Challengers (rare in NZ), one
is manual but the other auto with shiftkit which definitely does the job.
My wheels are standard 205/60/R15. Tyres are average quality
non-directional Dunlops (fitted by previous owner). I inflate to 32/33 PSI
which the tyre shop guy said was about right.
Adrian - snorkus project sounds like a plan

I will let ya know how it goes. I'll also be installing a tranny cooler
as well.
I've never been a real fan of the dunlops.....they sucks....IMO. Those
are reasonable tire pressures......you could try runnin a tad higher in
the front....maybe 33-35, and leave the rears alone, or drop a psi or
two.

thanks Josh. Will be interested to hear how your shift kit turns out.
My girlfriends dad owns not 1 but 2 (!!!) Dodge Challengers (rare in
NZ), one is manual but the other auto with shiftkit which definitely
does the job. My wheels are standard 205/60/R15. Tyres are average
quality non-directional Dunlops (fitted by previous owner). I inflate
to 32/33 PSI which the tyre shop guy said was about right.
Adrian - snorkus project sounds like a plan

I've never been a real fan of the dunlops.....they sucks....IMO. Those
are reasonable tire pressures......you could try runnin a tad higher in
the front....maybe 33-35, and leave the rears alone, or drop a psi or
two.

Removing Intake "Snorkus" from Leagacy Turbo.
Since you have AWD.....you need to replace all 4 tires at the same time.
You need to keep the rolling diameter the same so you do not fry the
center diff and transmission.
Kumho's, Ecsta 712 are supposed to be pretty good and not very
expensive. I've heard good things about them....have heard they may
have small issues with being perfectly round.....not sure......I haven't
had any direct experience with them, but am considering them for my next
tires.

Removing Intake "Snorkus" from Leagacy Turbo.
ASee, and having driven Subarus with teh Kumhos, I HATE them with a
passion...right up there with NItto IMHO.
To datem the best tires I ahve used on the Subarus (Legacy Turbos and Impreza
GC8 and WRX GDA are (in order):
Pirelli P Zero Asymetrico
P Zero Rosso (only used on WRX GDA)
Bridgestone Pole Position S)3
Yokohama A520
Toyo Proxes T1S
Falken Azenis (good tire, sumemr only, next to no tread life though)
Sumitomo HTRZII (best bang for the buck tire out there IMHO for the car)
Yokohama Parada (have yet to try the new spec 2).
Admittedly, many the above are pricier tires, but all work VERY well.
Remember, jsut because a tire gets a favorable rating from a magazine,e tc.,
does not mean it will work well on your car...suspension setup, wheel weight,
wheel diameter, etc. all make a HUGE difference in how well the tires work.
The above is what we haev found from years of working on these cars, but most
of my experiences have been with 17 inch sizes.

I would recomend Falcon tires, they are to expensive and they work
really well. My 2 cents

Correction "I would recomend Falcon tires, they are to expensive and
they work really well.". I ment to say 'I would recomend the Falcon
GBRs or the Ariez. They have both worked very well for me.'

Removing Intake "Snorkus" from Leagacy Turbo.
Just another thing to think about Nokian Tyre produces
a Model called the NRZi, Their other models are used
in the states by some Rally/ice racers. I like the
NRZi on dry pavement, but they shine in the wet,
especially on front drivers.

Removing Intake "Snorkus" from Leagacy Turbo.
Yes, I placed mine inside the guard as well because in those pics where
they've cut the hole in the airbox is where the ABS unit sits on my car.
Also, where they've positioned the intake is way too low for my liking.
Even though the inner guard kind of protects it still, I was worried
about ingesting water and dirt so mine sits right up high inside the
guard. Depends how often you do river crossings I 'spose.

Removing Intake "Snorkus" from Leagacy Turbo.
I have done this mod about a year ago and it works well.
I removed the standard airbox and snorkel and then heated and molded
the pvc ducting so that it fits perfectly through the snorkel opening
into the engine bay. So it simply provides a nice flow of 'cold' air
onto my foam Pipercross pod filter. You will need to fab some sort of
heat shield aswell to protect the intake from engine heat.

Back to the snorkus. I am sorry for the pictures I just sent but thought they might be to small if I posted them. Hopefully this should help everyone.

Removing Intake "Snorkus" from Leagacy Turbo.
Mine suts about 3in above the front light and about 5in back from it sucking up the good stuff. I used 1 90degree bend and a 135degree bend. I fluted the end of the pipe using a heat gun and pushed it over the funel when it was soft. Sanded the end back until it was smooth. I have some pics and will have to get them in the photos section.

Yes, I would appreciate it if you did post your modified snorkus pics,
I'd like to get a grasp on the idea before I start chopping!

Removing Intake "Snorkus" from Leagacy Turbo.
the magazine I got this from is gone.... somewhere, somehow it has gone missing.
The pictures were just a basic idea on what could be done and to show the resonator. I myself opted to open the std inlet in the air box and feed air through from the inner gaurd.... not as the picture does by cutting holes or having it pickup down low where water may enter.
cheers, Rod... in oz.
PS...sorry for late response... been skiing.
