Has anyone had the following noise problem?
For the past 6 months or so, there has been a rattleling sound (like a loose or fractured heat shield) from the turbo area. I have taken out the turbo shielding but the noise is still there, especially at idle, disappearing as the revs go higher.
The turbo itself is working properly, kicking in at it's 2850 rpm range and "whines" nicely.
It's just this damn rattlying noise that's driving me nuts.
The dealer and independent mechanic will dismantle the unit to find out, but I don't think it's worth the cost.
Any ideas from anyone?
Thanks in advance.

I had the SAME exact problem. Is the sound louder wher you lift the trottle?? It probably will if it doesn't now!!!
It's the wastegate that is jammed in rust. The little metal circular pipece that closes the wastegate won't close completly so it will rattle. Means I had more boost that the wastegate would normaly give. I kept hitting the fuelcut at 13 psi. I had the turbo taken out by my mecanic and he fixed it. Took 4 hours to take it off, fix it and put it back.
Good luck!!!!

I have a similar noise. I don't think it's a rusty wastegate though because I'm still getting stock boost levels. I'm thinking there's some exhaust shielding bent and touching the exhaust somewhere. I don't get the sound at idle though, only under mild acceleration. It seems to disappear after about 3,000 rpm. I've just been lazy about finding it though so I don't have any solid answers.

I had a rattling sound coming from my turbo area at about 3,000rpm,it was a missing bolt on my turbo chimney.it was a real pain to replace being it was the lowest one by my downpipe.
