Higher amp alternator

Post by THAWA »

What choices for a higher amp alternator do we have? Are all sooby alts 70 amps? What about using a gm alternator? Will it fit? I imagine the mounting points wouldn't be the exact same, but what about the pulley? Are they usually the same size or woudl you have to put an oem size pulley on a gm alt if it fit? Also I heard talk of having your alternator rewound, what kind of amperage does this yield? Around how much is it? Too many questions? ;)

Do a bit of searching; it's been brought up before. Josh actually has a high output alternator on his car and he described it in another thread.

With enough effort you could probably make any alternator fit. There isn't much room in the stock housing to rewind it for higher output, though. I don't think any stock Subaru alternators have higher output than ours.

Alternators get tired as they get old, too, though... a new or remanufactured alternator will likely work noticeably better than a 100,000-mile-old one.

There's really not too many options.....the one I have was around 350 or something like that, and I had to extend the main power leads and rewire the plug.......so it's defintely not a plug and play item.

However max amp output is like 160amps

I'm going to be getting a smaller alternator pulley and stock size crank pulley to overdrive the alternator slightly to help with the faster amp cutoff on the HO alternators.
