Should I buy it? help???

Post by Zendriver »

Guys,

I found a 93 legacy turbo for sale, but the guy who owns it says that the motor was rebuilt after the previous owner tried to intercool it and blew gasket or seal.

So, the engine has been rebuilt and returned to factory non-intercooled specs.

Should I even consider making this purchase? I've read how bullet proof the ej22 is in here. Should I be concerned about this or what?

How much more do you know about it? For instance, is the price fair? High mileage? Overall condition? I'd say if the motor was rebuilt properly and the owner(s) didn't abuse if afterwards, it should be okay. If you're really interested, you could check it for compression and leakdown %.

turbo legacy

He wants $2500-$3000 for it. Overall the car is good condition. The body is straight and no damage. The previous owner put a WRX hood scoop on it and it's so so. The interior is good except for the steering wheel that was taken apart and no airbags.

The mileage before the rebuild was 96k. The car was sitting in a garage for the past 6 months and ran occasionally by the current owner. The current owner also owned a Subaru shop and he said that mechanically the car is perfect. Cosmetically the only thing that has detracted other buyers is the less than professionally installation of the scoop.

From what you have told us, I say go for it. It is most likely that he blew a head gasket. If the car was fixed quickly and wasn't run low on fliuds then internal damage to the engine is pretty unlikely. Since this guy is a Subaru mechanic, just ask him exactly what repair was done. As for the hood scoop, there has been a hood and a scoop for sale (different sellers) in the parts shed recently...

I agree to buy it. I wouldn't worry much about the engine having any serious issue unless a complete idiot rebuilt it. Every day that I look at the engine torn apart in my kitchen I'm hugely impressed at how well built and engineered they are - these things are tanks. I'd bet they could build a diesel boxer if they brought back this block.

The car is in San Diego...

Someone snaked it from under me. Bastard! I made plans to take the day off tomorrow and the guy who owned just called me and said someone just came up late in the afternoon and bought it. Just like that.

F@#%* Then he said "ooopppsss I'm sorry." I said that he knew I was coming tomorrow, I took a day off work and asked my friend to go with me. Then he said "well the guy had money in hand".

Bastard.

I want to kick this guy's face in.

*@&#(! That sucks!

Did he imply he was gonna hold it until tomorrow for you? I mean, I can understand the "first one to give me cash in hand gets it" philosophy because it's so easy for potential buyers to give you the runaround, but you gotta be explicit and honest about it.

I agree with everything in this response. I know where you can get a '94 Turbo wagon, but it isn't cheap. And I am selling first come first served. But seriously, just be patient, another one will come along...

What an ass!

When I was looking for my first car, I was REALLY close to getting a 91 Sentra SE-R, with low miles and a very good price. I still kinda wish I got that car, and if I found one in good condition around here, I still might buy it! SUPER fun car to drive! 8)

I looked at it, and unfortunately someone already had a deposit on it. But the owners said they made it weeks ago, and if the people didn't come back the next day, they would let me have it. They even said they'd much rather sell it to me that the people who had the deposit.

So with a big grin on my face, I called them up the next morning, and the people had just left "not 20 minutes ago" they said. What a bummer that was!

However, if Id'a gotten that car, I wouldn't have my Scoobs. It was for the best :D

There is a 91 for sale up in Sacramento here. It is in the Parts forum. I took a ride in it and it still runs strong. It has 275,000 miles, though. The car comes with a stereo, wrx rims, nice tires, and is for a negotiable price of 2500.

Same EXACT thing happened with a 93 Turbo Sedan (5MT) in Boston. I was going to fly up and buy it straight out, but it was sold the day I said I would buy it, lol. No biggie though.

Immediately after, I found a 94 turbo sedan on E-Bay, and ended up winning it. 94k, 5MT, body and interior look pretty damn good. We ended up getting a decent deal, and will likely go to pick it up this weekend.
