Car Weight?

I looked in my door jam today to see if it would tell me how much my car weighed, I saw 4110LB on there and was wondering if thats the weight for a 92 Turbo 5spd? Damn if it is i had to idea i was driving a tank around

The door jamb has never stated the actual weight of the car. It does state the maximum recommended weight of the car plus passengers and cargo.
The 92 Turbo 5MT should weight around 3100lbs:

Maybe you were looking at the gross vehicle weight rating? That's the maximum total weight (car plus cargo) that the chassis is rated for.
Though 4110 pounds doesn't seem like that much cargo, since I seem to remember Legacy sedans weighing around 3200 pounds.

Most smaller cars are rated to carry 8-900 pounds. 4110 - 900 = 3210?

Really? 900 pounds doesn't seem like very much. It seems like 4 grown-up men in the passenger compartment and their luggage in the trunk could easily exceed that.

Yup. Im pretty sure the 2003 is only rated at 1000 lbs, so imagine our soft chassis rating.

These figures are straight from the 1990 fsm, which does not include the turbo model. I would guess a turbo model would be ~40 lbs heavier

I think the weight ratings are like elevator ratings (where each of the multiple cables can hold three times the rating) as my old rotted '84 was rated at 750lbs (before the rot), but I packed it with a few hundred pounds over that back and forth to Detroit running near redline through most of Canada and never had a problem. Also fit 13 kids in one time (this was high school), although I couldn't get over 25 mph.

i think the determining factor is the suspension. I know it doesnt take much to bottom out bmws. And they can't specify where you are loading your weight. Maybe you have a trunk full of rocks.

I think its the tires. Why do you think some trucks have duellies? It has nothing to do with traction, its because you cant get single tires to hold up the fully loaded weight.

I think its a combination of tires and suspension. To prevent bottoming out on the old car I got truck air shocks for the back (looked cool with the back jacked up anyway) and for the weight I fully inflated the tires. Don't do that in the desert, though - the heat will expand and can blow the tires out.

I thought on the little plate in the door jam there was a rating for each axel and one more for the whole car?

curb weight is the dry weight, and is what you posted scott.
gross weight is what the car is "allowed" to carry.
The actual weight will vary.
I weighed mine on truck scales. I posted something in one of the forums...don't remember which. Full tank of gas and me in there, my car weighed about 3100 lbs....that's with sub box too.

my LEAN legacy weighed 1300 k so in LBs its 2860lbs not bad but its still going on a diet.

Edmunds lists my 2000 Sedan at 3,200 lbs dry. I'll weigh it tomorrow and see what it actually weighs in at. :p I'll have to find a scale that's working, though. A lot of the local scales are out of order?

FYI, curb weight is NOT dry. it includes all fuilds at nominal level
