Replacing front speakers on 90 L wagon

I'm in the process of slowly replacing my nearly dead stock audio setup. I figured out how to remove the rear speakers, but the front ones are another story. I'm hoping that I won't have to remove the entire door.

Any helpful advice is appreciated.

yeah you just have to take off the door panel. remove all the screws, including the one in the big handle and under the upper pocket and pry it off, it pops off and on.

Plan on using spacers. There are very few speakers that will fit without (2?). The stock speakers have a 1/2 inch or so spacer built in. Dont install them without or you could damage your new speakers or brake the window mechanism.

LISTEN TO CIPER. YOU CAN GET 1 INCH SPACERS FOR ~15$. Don't even try anything without them. A drill is a handy tool too for this chore.

You can order your speakers from Crutchfield, they give you the adaptors for the door speakers and wiring harness. You can get a decent set for $50 plus shipping. Very good deal. Also, you might consider installing the factory tweeters on the inside like the later models. They can be had for $15.00 plus shipping, they are factory Sube parts and must be modified slightly to fit, but they sound terrific.

I just resently replaced my f/door speakers. All I did was drill out the spot welds on the spacer and used small machine scewes and nuts to mount the new speakers on the spacer.

You drilled out the spot welds on the original speaker spacers? is that correct?

I replaced the rear speakers in my 93 BF with 6.5" speakers, used double sided tape to hold them in place and it works great. I purchased my fronts from Crutchfield and they sent along as part of the sale (FREE) the adaptor brackets, which worked perfectly. They also sent an adaptor harness which was 'not quite' right. Since I also installed the factory A pillar tweeters, I just cut the connectors off the old speakers and soldered the ends from the tweeters and main harness together. I have got to tell you, those tweeters really expand the sound envelope within the car. For $15.00 I could not go too far wrong. The Sirius Satellite radio service as good as it is, really sounds a lot better. My only complaint is the wind noise coming from the A pillar area. I remember a friend of mine had a new 93 and it did the same thing. I am going nutz trying to find where it is coming from, but crankin up the tunes seems to solve the problem.

I did the same thing scubaroo did removed the spacer from the stock speakers and put in screws that came with the speakers the self threading type and some tape in between works perfectly !!!!!!!!!!!
