reasoning behind our 2 outlet muffler?

Post by SPARTUS »

is there any reason our Legacy's come with a 2 outlet muffler from the factory, as opposed to one that most car manufactures use. Are there advantages, gains, disadvantges,...?

I would guess looks most likely, but possible low-end torque at best.

It's just for looks, no performance benefit...

I don't like it... too outdated and tacky-looking for me. One of the reasons why I like my larger single-outlet 98 GT exhaust so much better...

Oh yeah, pics, workin on em ;)

I agree that it's primarily for looks, but wouldn't it flow a little better than the single outlet mufflers just because there's more cross-sectional area?

I'm just pulling numbers out of the air here, but two 1.5-inch-diameter outlets have a combined cross section of about 3.5 square inches. One 2-inch-diameter outlet has a cross section of about 3.14 square inches.

I think flow is primarily dictated by inlet diameter (2.25"?), and the internals of the muffler. Any outlet, reguardless of size, is only going to flow as much as the inlet and internals will allow.

If anything, it's just to tune sound. By having a larger outlet, you decrease the velocity of the exhaust which makes for a low, non-I4 rumble.

Two outlets? Becuase the recess in the bumper skin is too big for a single.

I like the twin outlet too. I think it's just much more stealth. I'd rather not give a cop a reason to pull me over if I can help it

Yea, but everything is illegal in CA, so that doesn't surprise me.

Legacy92ej22t's car looks perfectly fine with a 4" rolled tip. Doesn't even really seem THAT out of place.

8)
It looks really good actually. I was a little worried about how it would look before I put it on but as soon as I saw it I was immediately put at ease as it looks pimp!

The tip style can make a big difference when having only one large tip. Some scream rice, while others look great.

I like dual tips too but given the choice I'd stick with my 4" rolled tip. :D

On a related note Matt:

What's the 4" straight tip look like? Are you going to keep it, or swap over the rolled tip?

In maybe 2 weeks i should be having This installed.

I'll post plenty of pics, if i don't like the looks i'll probably end up with a perrin twin tip muffler.

The muffler is a BPM GT, DP is invidia, the MP is also BPM GT, but will need a few inches added. Hangers prolly need modifying too :)

Well, it's actually a 3" straight tip. It's much more stealth looking then my 4" rolled tip. I really like my blingin' 4" but the sleeper value of the 3" is pretty sweet too. I'll probably just go with the 3" for now and who knows, maybe I'll change it later if I decide I want the bling.

It's a 3" straight tip? I could have sworn that Jon told me 4".

Well I'm even more sold now, lol. I've got a line on my bike, so fingers are crossed :)

Sweet, have you got anyone looking at the '95 yet? I know you posted it in the parts shed here. Did you post it in the classified's at nabisco and I-club?

I just got all my new gaskets (DP, UP, CP and header to manifold) yesterday and picked up an Autometer Phantom series EGT and Boost gauge too. I'm really stoked to replace my shitty OBX boost gauge. Note to everyone: Do not to buy OBX gauges, both vrg3 and I have had 'em and they both read 3-5 psi low on boost and in vacuum.

Kind of back on topic, I was talking to Jon and he said he could probably get dual tips on the CES systems but it would require an additional fee of roughly around $150 USD. That's probably not set in stone though as it was mentioned kind of casually. It's a bit much but the sleeper value of looking stock would be killer.

No interest in the 95. I'm not driving it anymore. I'm just putting miles (almost 300 per week) on a car that I'm trying to sell.

So the 95 get's parked and I drive the green machine 93 Ranger until I sell the 95.
