How much does the average paintjob cost?

I will be keeping the same color and everything, I just want to know what to expect.

Someone posted in another thread $2300 - $2700?

That sounds kind of expensive to keep the same color. What do you guys think?

I need to get some rust repaired, and I might as well give the 10 year old girl a fresh coat.

Depends on what you mean. You can get really cheap jobs for 300.

I am in the process of getting my car painted as well as the dents removed. My paint job cost me $1200 dollars with an intergrated clear coat. Depending on body work, your looking at about $900-1100 for a nice coat of paint.

integrated clear coat? What do they do as far as prep work when keeping the same colour? Do they remove old paint? Sand it and prime? Use one of those weird sealer prep coats for putting over old paint? Are you using Maaco? I remember hearing they used an integrated clear coat.
I really want paint...on both my cars, but I can't really afford to shell out 2500$, especially not for two cars. I wonder if we could get a group buy on getting our cars painted....I got two spots on the GB! too bad we live scattered all over...

Mine cost $3200. Complete repaint in OEM dark blue metallic, all dents fixed, trim and bumpers removed for paint, rear wheel arches and partial sills reconstructed due to rot and rolled for tire clearance, and new hood as the old one was too dented to bother fixing.

I took it there, was told one week to complete it. Two weeks later they had it "finished". Went to the shop to look at it. Touched it with my finger and to my suprise my finger mark was still in the paint. Second, I had asked them to paint my grill which was off the car. They did not. Thrid, I asked them to fix the dents I itemized upon leaving them the car. They did not. Fourth, the paint gun must have had water in it because the paint had the "fish eyes" all over it and was rough as sand paper to the touch. They will never recieve my business ever again, and if they don't get it right this time I will get my full refund or I will see them in court.

I went to a place previously to have some scratches and a new fender painted and I told them all sorts of stuff to do. They did almost none of it, but I had no recourse as they didn't write it all on the estimate sheet even though the guy was writing the whole time. I had stupidly signed it without looking it over. Never do that again, nor use them. That $3200 business went elsewhere, and frankly, I think they did better work anyway, so it all worked out.

Where did you go with your car? Local paint shop?

Local guy my mechanic recommended. He was cheaper and did better work than some of the other guys I checked out. Most didn't even want to deal with rust repair - just new car wrecks so they could overcharge inurance companies. This guy had this '71 454 Chevelle he restored and an old Pagoda Mercedes-Benz in the shop.

Good call. I'm going to see who my mechanic uses.

I need rust repaired and want my mirrors painted body color. All the dents fixed would be cool too.

If I could get everything repaired and painted for, say, 2500, then I'd be stoked. Even 3k would be OK I guess. I figure getting the rust repaired and repaint that area would cost around 500 bucks.

I'll worry about getting the whole car repainted when I close on getting the performance aspect of the car finished

North of Boston area is one of the most expensive areas in the country, so that should work in your favor. I would also assume that you have less rust than me to fix. The wheel arches had to be replaced and they took care of a few other spots (one under the side rear window, a bad one starting under the weatherstripping at the bottom of the tailgate window, and some rust starting under the gas tank lid). They also fixed the few dents I had.

Well worth it as the car looks like new and I don;t look as foolish parking in the middle of nowhere anymore. I figured I wasn't going to transplant a new engine into a rotted car. If I didn't take care of it last summer, I'd be needing a new car in a couple years (I have too much experience with rust). Looking at the car, I forgot all about the money. I suggest getting some 1-step rust preventer, too. The guy gave me a big bottle to pour into the sills and paintbrush onto the insides of the wheelarches before re-undercoating them. He said the stuff works really well as he did similar work on a Datsun and the sills still look new 12 yrs later. If it can work on a Datsun, a Subaru will be fine.
