Replacing the heat shield on a Cross-Pipe

Post by syphon »

How hard is this to do on my '93 Turbo Legacy?

The heat shield on my exhaust crosspipe near the passenger side is cracked... so it squeaks BAD (when I'm idling, I cant hear the engine over the squeak).

Is it possible to just replace the heat-shielding or should I just get a whole new cross pipe? Is this difficult to do? Where can I get a new one other than a dealership?

I've checked junkyards around here, and legacies are kinda rare, but Turbo Legacies are very rare.

Your not gonna find a decent replacemnt in a yard. If yours is rattling, changes are one in a junkyard is gonna be just as bad if not worse. You can either get a new one from a dealer, I have no idea what a dealer charges though. Or get header wrap and wrap it around the pipe. Or, if there are wrx guys around you upgrading their exhausts then grab their old ones.

I used large hose clamps on mine. It had rusted at the bolt holes. I think I used the 4" ones, and made sure it was out of the way when tight.

Clamps are the easiest fix. I used them on my cat's heat shield. Cut the extra off as they will buzz at certain rpms. Removing the shields is tough even with the engine on a stand in the kitchen since I'm sure the heat shield bolts will not cooperate. I removed all mine and the exhaust cleaned up to almost new.
