The grass isn't always greener...

Post by Dr Nick »

I, like some others, have been considering whether it's worth the effort to keep my Legacy going when there are so many other nice cars available.

A friend who works for Jaguar here in Coventry managed to organise the loan of an X-type Sport 2.0V6 for a week. I collected my Suby last night and was SO glad to be back in it.

Don't get me wrong - the Jag is a beautiful car, nicely packaged, with a lovely sounding engine and a very relaxing environment to be in, but it's just not ME!! Where's the fantastic midrange acceleration? Where's the superb traction?

Now I'm considering investing some money in bringing my ol' Legacy back up to scratch - bit of bodywork, gearbox overhaul, new clutch etc - because it's just fantastic to drive. And given the GBP22,400 cost of the Jag (USD41,700 at today's exchange rate!!) I could do a lot with my car...

Jag's lost their "cool" when Ford bought them out.

Even worse, they gained reliability.

The old jag's were in the shop more than on the road. The new jag's are cat-clad lincolns. Comfortable as all getout though.

I take it you don't get the V8 Jag's in the UK? Here we get the X-Type R, powered by the 4.6L V8. It's spunky.

Sports cars are a dying breed. Everything is "sport luxury" these days.

I think you're talking about the S-type R. The X-type is the transverse engine Mondeo (new generation Euro Contour) rebody with AWD. The president of our company had an XJR (400 HP supercharged V8) and used it to do doughnuts and peel out of parking lots. Scotts...

Yeah, X-types they can't give away over here starting around $30,000 US. I think people want BMWs and Infiniti G35s for that money.

We're finally getting your Lotus Elise soon, so all will be right with the world.

We have a selection of V8 Jags here, but I wasn't offered one of them (boo...) 8)

For example the XK8R with a supercharged V8 http://www.jaguar.com/uk/en/xk/performance/default.htm

The best bang for the buck is an older xj6 with chevy swap. Cheap reliable power and plenty of spair parts or upgrades.

Steve - Your right, I meant X-type R. My bad.

Ciper - Cheap power, but the rest of the car still breaks. I was going to buy a 1985 XK12 (something like that. V12 powered convertible), but repair costs were (are) through the roof. Inboard brakes = suck.

Those V12s are rediculous you'd be better off with a Ferrari 308 in the long run - maintenance is easier and cheaper. The inline 6s weren't bad for an ancient design. The last Jag I care about is the XKSS and I doubt I'll ever even be able to afford a good fake.

I test drove it, and it was a hoss and a half, but would have just been to expensive for me.
