TC no fitty
I made the mistake of pulling off the TC to see why it wasn't going in far enough. I have done a search and have read that when it all lines up there are 3 clicks and your done. It appears to be all the way in but it still looks like it can go in another 5 to 10 mm. There are the 4 tabs that mount to the crankshaft plate. Should these be located inside the bellhouse area when the TC is all the way in. If you look at the engine the crankshaft plate is almost flush with the end of the engine so I'm guessing the TC would have to go in further. Any info would be helpful,

THIS MUTHER$%&@ING THING IS PISSING ME OFF NOW. I have messed with this all day today again. I have come to the conclusion that the TC needs to go in further to the trans. I pulled out the long shaft and tried to refit the TC to see if the shaft was keeping it from going further and saw that it was not. I am at a loss, I dont know what to do from here. I dont know.......

Ya, thats the way to do it. Pull the inspection cap off, on top of the bell housing, and put the four bolts in from there.mTk wrote: What you should try next is putting the TC onto the tranny first, then putting it all into the car.

Everything should line up, just dont drop the bolt. I always use a magnet to hold onto em.

Hmm, I guess magicmike didn't post his follow-up yet. He got it figured out last night using the info on these pages from the FSM:

If I understood him correctly on IRC, he had originally left the oil pump shaft in the transmission. He was able to get the torque converter back in by first removing the oil pump shaft and attaching it to the torque converter, and then installing both together onto the transmission.

All I have been trying to do is get the TC onto the tranny. The engine is not in yet. The problem I was having was that it would not go towards the trans far enough. Well last night with the help of vrg3 and his FSM's we got it in! The problem I was having was that there was another hollow shaft that was left in the tranny when I pulled out the TC. This hollow shaft apparently drives the oil pump in the tranny. Well there is a clip that attatches that shaft TO THE TC BEFORE YOU PUT THE TC INTO THE TRANNY. So once I had it all on the bench and assembled I slid it into place and it went in the same amount as before.....then I rotated it about 45° and CLINK went in the rest of the way......AWESOME!!!!!!!!

ok, I got the damn thing in right.....it took me a while to get the STI engine mounts to line up with the slots in the crossmember but I finally got it. so I started the first bolt of four on the plate that bolts to the TC. Well I get down to the last few threads and the whole TC springs foward toward the engine and makes a little clank sound. It sounded like the little spring holding it back came off too. Now I'm confused. I know that the engine is as far back as possible. I also know that the plate that goes on the crankshaft is on correctly...so I guess I'm gonna leave it although I'm not sure its correct. I'm not about to pull the whole damn thing out again. I dont know.............never again! lol

I feel your pain
This was about 12 years ago. I had gotten pretty good at replacing the clutch on my 1977 1600 DL. In case you are less than 30 years old, this is the 1970's series of subes and replacing the clutch does include pulling the engine. Anyway, I had gotten the clutch replacement time down to 3 hours. This was from the moment of popping the hood and starting to unbolt the hood, to rebolting the hood. Damn, loved the old subies.
So I get the engine and tranny back in, hook the engine host back up to the trailer hitch on the back of the 1600 and return the host (only rented 5 hours earlier I might brag!) and start driving home. I stop in and let a buddy drive the 1600 around a few blocks, drop him off and start to drive home.
Bam!!!!!

I seem to be having the same problem right now. I purchased a junkyard tranny to replace my blown 4EAT. My TC wouldn't drop in that few mm. I tried pulling the oil pump shaft out but it wasn't budging. It won't rotate or slide in or out at all. I eventually propped the tranny up on its output shaft and put the TC in from the top. Now I'm worried about this oil pump shaft that wouldn't move. I was planning on installing this tranny this afternoon after work.
Any thoughts? Should I be worried about that oil pump shaft?
