legacys for a new buyer!

Post by triggerhappey »

i have always been a turbo enthusiast- formerly with saabs mostly- and also a big fan of mark 2 golfs. however, i went to new zealand/australia and was overwhelmed by the evil, understated looks and obscene noises the 90-94 legacys were making- this all aside from the power of them. I have now decided its my next car, i have been reading most of the topics on this website and have some good ideas of what i want to do once i get one, but i was wanting some help of you long term enthusiast with buying it. essentially:

other than the practicallity is there much difference between estates and saloons (driveability, handling, preformance, problems)?

what are the important signs of ware, tear and abuse to look for when buying as this is an old car (ball joints, tappet probs, cracked heads etc)

finally what sort of mileage are these things capable as, considering i will probably drive it quite hard, though respectfully, and am intending on doing gradual modifications.

any help much appreciated.

Wagons have better front/rear weight distribution and like to over steer more easily due to the higher center of gravity and longer rear overhang. Sedans are stiffer, though.

The trunk (boot) is not as large as a Jetta (Bora), but the fold-down seats help w/ large items, although the bottom cusion does not fold up. I get around 25-27 MPG on long trips at 75 mph.
No major issues to tell about, but rust on the front wings is common at the side trim strip, and also check under the wheel arch trim, it tends to trap moisture & grime. Look for a 5-spd! Many mechanical parts can be upgraded w/ WRX/STI parts.
Have fun, good luck in the search
