legacys for a new buyer!

i have always been a turbo enthusiast- formerly with saabs mostly- and also a big fan of mark 2 golfs. however, i went to new zealand/australia and was overwhelmed by the evil, understated looks and obscene noises the 90-94 legacys were making- this all aside from the power of them. I have now decided its my next car, i have been reading most of the topics on this website and have some good ideas of what i want to do once i get one, but i was wanting some help of you long term enthusiast with buying it. essentially:
other than the practicallity is there much difference between estates and saloons (driveability, handling, preformance, problems)?
what are the important signs of ware, tear and abuse to look for when buying as this is an old car (ball joints, tappet probs, cracked heads etc)
finally what sort of mileage are these things capable as, considering i will probably drive it quite hard, though respectfully, and am intending on doing gradual modifications.
any help much appreciated.
