Looking for 6.5" speakers

I want to get new speakers for my car but I don't know what to look for. I'm a little more familiar with high end car audio but I don't want to spend that kind of money. I want a little better then stock sound and power capabilities but don't want to spend very much. So, does anyone have any suggestions?

Pioneer is your best bet. They sound ok and are extreamly thin. Probably cost ya 50 bucks or so.

A basic stock upgrade that sounds great. Got them in my car now because I really needed to get rid of the stock speakers but am on a college-student budget. They have a very satisfying sound, especially for the price of $50 a pair and a pretty full bass. I'm a happy customer.

Werd. . . Pioneers are actually a great bang for the buck. They can be bought anywhere, so the likelihood of finding very competitive prices is high.

I might consider this. I am a HUGE fan of the stock speakers, I think they put out a very good amount of bass for the fact that they're factory paper, and the midrange quality is excellent. They even take a lot of abuse. Hmm, sounds like the rest of the car

But I have finally pushed theirs to the breaking point, and my JVC head unit (which I estimate to be somewhere in the 4-year-old range) is starting to skip over bumps. No biggie, it cost me $40

So I'll give some Pioneer stuff a try with the myriad of things I wanna do this summer

I have replaced my speakers, rear tower and front door with Kenwood KFC-1669S. I got them from Crutchfield for a total of $55.98 including shipping, per pair. This also included speaker adaptor brackets and wiring harness adaptor. I would shy away from Pioneers at the price quoted here, I checked into them at Best Buy and it turns out that they have paper surrounds and cones, which is about the same as factory speakers. The listed Pioneer TS-G1640R look like a fair buy and they have composite construction. I bought a set of factory tweeters which mount on the A pillars and the factory sub-woofer (Panasonic). The tweeters pn: H6300AS010 I got from AllSubaru.com for $15.00, plus shipping. The subwoofer pn: H6300AS030 with two day shipping cost me: $81.02 from subaruparts.com. This includes and 80 watt powered sub with mounting bracket for under the pilot seat as well as the harness for a 95 and up. What is great here is that Subaru included a wiring diagram which I used to modify the harness to work with my Kenwood/Sirius radio setup, which was very easy. I would recommend soldering the 'hot' lead on the diagram to switched power. It works great and the whole car just opened up with sound. Way cool, and cheap

I have to agree on the kenwoods. I put pairs in my Maxima, and upgraded the legacy last week. I put the Kenwoods all around ( from Crutchfield) and cranked it. It sounded way better than the 6 speaker + sub factory set in the 01 impreza rs. Make sure you have some stickyback foam to put around the front speaker bracket to cover the hole. It makes a difference. They were 55 a pair, and well worth it. Right material, right sound quality and right price

I had a set of Pioneers in the 95. They were OK. Poly cone, rubber surround, decent sound. Nothing to write home about.

You want a stiff cone and a flexible surround for good, sharp sound.

So when looking for speakers, you want something with a light, stiff cone and a beefy rubber surround.

I'd suggest Alpine Type-R's, Diamond Audio's, or Polk (with the carbon fiber cone).

All three will offer some SHARP sound. Just buy the speaker with the proper spec, and you're in.

Go to a good specalty store (Tweeter, Meyer Emco, places like that) for good quality and good selection.

For a budget, I would prolly go with the Infinity Kappas.

If not, then Boston Pros or A/D/S.

I've got Kenwood Excelon XR-600's in my rear, looking to get a set of XR-700's in the front.

Since I've got subs they make a great set for mid/high speakers.
