how to set TBS?
Can anyone guide me as to how to properly adjust the TBS sensor? I was told by a long-time Suby mechanic that if it isn't positioned properly then I would experience bogging from off-idle through wot. Since some "mechanics" in a shop worked on my car quite some time back, my car has always been acting that way when it wasn't previous to the "mechanics" working on the engine. Oh, yes, I've got a '93 Legacy, na, auto. The long-time Suby mechanic said something about needing a voltmeter and adjusting the sensor to a specific reading and that if I cannot get that reading, then I'll need a new sensor. Any thoughts, anyone?

Wow! Thanks THAWA! Now all I need is a little block of time and a voltmeter! Can't wait to get my Suby tuned properly!
I had actually tinkered with the TPS on my own with no meter. The car actually runs better than before. But now it'll be much better!
Steve, you're funny! Thanks for the gentle ribbing.

tbs is still a tv station......I'm watching it right now....
You pretty much only need to look and use the third scan to adjust the tps.

I finally had the time this afternoon to adjust the TPS. The car sounds different and responds differently. It now sounds louder, like a monster with a metallic sounding moan, even at low rpms. I've noticed the needle on the temp gauge is a bit higher too, about 1-1/2 to 2 needles width higher. It seems more powerful but the engine still sounds retarded (timing-wise), like it's laboring. I think it needs more advanced timing. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can make the engine get more advanced timing?
According to the second amd third scans provided by THAWA, the diagram shows a stopper screw that is not supposed to be adjusted. I'm supposing it is preset by the factory and shouldn't be moved. Well, I recall one mechanic a while back adjusting that screw. In fact, as he was adjusting it he told me it wasn't supposed to be adjusted. Now, if that screw is not set where it supposed to be, how do I set it properly? Would a misadjustment of that screw cause my car to perform poorly in all rpm ranges?

I tried disconecting battery even for the whole night and it didn't work. I had to connect the green and black testing connectors and drove it for couple of minutes. As soon as the CEL starts flashing (not reading codes or smth like that) just stop and disconect both connectors. That's it. Before you do this warm up the engine. Do everything from above at normal operating engine temperature.

Having the connectors connected only clears the codes. It does not reset te ecu.

I don't know if there is a way, honestly. If there is, I don't know of it.

I can be wrong but I am pretty sure that what I said resets the ECU.
The best thing...ask Ciper or Vrg3
and check this http://www.legacycentral.org/library/codes.htm

This thread discusses it:

Basically there's a difference between resetting the ECU and just clearing the codes. The connectors don't reset the ECU's learned parameters.

All interesting comments, including the thread. I know by disconnecting my battery overnight has brought about amazing differences in my car (93 NA). Now, it pulls smoothly and strongly, it even kicks down into low when I depress the accelerator half way down at low speeds (prior to adjusting the TPS and disconnecting the battery ground overnight I had to manually downshift into 1st with pathetic acceleration). I guess I'm saying that my ECU has been reset with great results by disconnecting the battery ground overnight. Just my experience.
