Let's talk...6MT into Legacy SS

Post by LegacySport4L »

Assuming this is a non DCCD 6 speed STi tranny, and the flywheel, shifter assembly, clutch disc and pressure plate are included, what else would I need to make this work in a USDM Legacy Sport Sedan?

Do all the 6 speeds require the R180 rear end?

How about axles...will they bolt up?

thanks,
-Mike

I remember there being a write up about this somewhere, but I forget as I can't afford it. The driveshaft had to be shortened and I think the axles were OK. The R160 could be used in the right ratio, of course, as the consensus seemed to be with all the Datsun 510s with big engines running these diffs without trouble, they can handle the torque.

does the 6mt not match the length of the rear driveshaft or the front one...or both? It does bolt on properly though aside from the length issue?

Do the legacy SS rear axles fit perfectly with a WRX rear end? I just read that when you switch the rear end, the axles are 1mm longer or something on the LSD rear end.

There's so much hearsay out on these boards...I'm just trying to get a straight answer on what's going to work :?

thanks,

I don't think anyone here has done this, so all you'll get is heresay. The LSD and axles thing is a seperate issue, but I think the Legacy and WRX use different axles, so I'm sure they'll need to be changed although Legacy LSD axles to WRX LSD I couldn't say. I know with the R180 rear end that you need the axles. The 6-speed transmission is longer so the standard driveshaft is too long. I'm not sure if there's an alternative Subaru driveshaft that will bolt in or if one will have to be modified, but the wheelsbase is too long for an STI driveshaft to work. The transmission tunnel needs a little creative hammering to fit, IIRC, too. The front axles will need to be from the 6MT. Yukonart has an STI and he could tell you about that.

well depending on the length of the transmission you could use an automatic's driveshaft. Just so ya know ej-series only have one external driveshaft/propshaft. The shaft to the front differential is inside the transmission along with the differential, so you don't have to worry about the length of that matching up. Since the impreza has a shorter wheelbase and the same sized transmission the driveshaft is shorter. The thing is though there are two parts to the driveshaft, a front a rear section. The rear section is the same length on mt or at cars, but the front section is where it's shorter or longer on at or mt cars respectively.

Like was said before this isn't somehting that's been done or is frequently done. You'd be a pioneer in a sense. What you should do is try to find out the measurements of the 6mt's driveshaft and match it up with one that fits. assuming you can find one. If these were only available in impreza's it might be tough though

sorry about the front shaft question...my head is full of conflicting information at the moment and in my attempt to sort it all out I had a brain fart.

If you got the measurements for a Legacy 5MT driveshaft length and an STI's and a WRX 5MT, you could figure out how long the new driveshaft would need to be.

Try eBay, or post a wtb ad. . Also, according to the tranny chart, Subaru hasn't made a 6mt with 4.11 rear end. 3.9 or (numerically) lower only.

Just waiting for Legacy777 to chime in. He swapped his 91' with a DCCD 6MT. Look at this build threads, very detailed.

I kept the same rear end, so any legacy axles will work.

For your swap, what rear end did you use? That will determine what axles you can use.
