Can I switch the position of Pistons in an EJ22T?

Heads, valves, pistons, rods, crankshaft, etc...

Can I switch the position of Pistons in an EJ22T?

Post by mreese »

I am rebuilding an old EJ22T I have.

When I pulled out the pistons one had a significant amount more scratching on the side then the others. I was told I should replace it.

I have some used pistons out of another EJ22T but unfortunately the scratching on the one I need is worse then the one I allready have.

So my question is, can I put a piston in the Left that is labeled Right. I see each piston has a label on it so I am not sure how that works. I suspect that perhaps it is just so the orientation of the piston isn't confused and thats it.

I noticed that the piston tops do have very slight valve cutouts in them and they are different exhuast to intake. So other than putting the Right hand piston in on the left upside down should I be aware of anything?

-Thanks a lot

If the wrist pin is offset you can't do it. On dual inboard marine engines, one engine is built to counter-rotate and cancel the torque of its mate. One of the things they have to do is switch the piston orientation or get new pistons with a different offset so that it will rotate in the opposite direction. The skirts may also be asymetrical.

If the wristpins don't appear to be offset and the piston fits in the cylinder and appears to be ok what do you think?

If they're perfectly symmetrical I don't see a problem, but that's my semi-educated opinion.

Phil - yeah I know that from research for a car I want to build with a front and a rear facing V8's mid-mounted in something that will vaguely resemble a Panoz LeMans prototype roadster.
