Ring replacement
Do you have to crack the engine block to replace the rings or can you take off the pan and disconnect the pistons and rods? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Nope. That's what sucks about boxer engines. You hafta pull the motor and separate the two halves of the block to get to the bottom end.
I'm curious though, how you got hold of an EJ22 in such bad condition that the rings need to be replaced. I've seen Legacies in absolutely terrible condition that still keep oil out of the combustion chamber...
Did you do a compression test? If you're getting low readings, did you squirt a bit of oil in the cylinders and then notice the readings going up? If this is what happened, then yeah you need new rings. I'm just really surprised to hear about bad rings in an EJ22...

The crankcase does not need to be split to replace the rings, but it it a PITA. There are plugs in the block that can be removed to fit a tool to pull the piston pins when the crank is rotated to orient them in the right position. There's a tool you can buy or one can be fabricated, but I haven't personally done it. These cars usually don't have ring issues.

subyluvr2212 Im not sure if it needs rings or not, I was just wondering. It was going through some oil but then I replaced the Cam and Crank seals and now it seems better. I am just thinking about doing some engine work after this summer and Im trying to get an idea of what should be done. Thanks for the info though.
