Subaru Legacy AWD Shudder/Vibration

I have a 1995 Subaru Legacy AWD L Sedan, that I am getting a shudder vibration coming from the right side rear wheel. I am in the process of getting estimates of what it might be, the first place is saying it's the clutch in the transmission and our quoting 2000-2800 depending on parts needed.

The shudder only happens when the car is first moving forward, then the shudder disappears, and it does not happen in reverse. It is not consistently happening all of the time, and can go for a day or two without making any noise. It is more apparent on turning right as well.

Any thoughts .....

Read this:

It's either the transmission, if yours is an auto, a wheel bearing, or perhaps an axle issue.

Wheel bearing is likely.

would this also produce debris and brass shavings in the auto-tran pan?

oh, no wheel bearings wouldn't do that, lol.

Since I'm not a car geek at all, can someone explain the clutch part of the Automatic transmission, which what they are saying needs to be replaced.

The clutch pack is for shifting. different clutches engange and disengage depending on what is going on.
