Engine Problems

Post by teaguespeed »

Ok, so i'm on my way to see some friends in bellingham, and as I'm first pulling onto the highway and excellerate up to speed the check engine light comes on. I pull off at the next exit and pop the hood, but see nothing obviously wrong. As i am getting back on the highway (CEL still on) i notice that the engine has much less power than usual, though besides that it seems to be running fine. Along the way the engine starts running rathe rough, especially when below 2500 rpm and trying to get some power out of it. It runs smoother above 3000 rpm. I get to my friends house rather frustrated. Now the reason i was going to my friends house was to go cliffjumping, and after a couple hours of calling arround nobody else can drive so we decide to limp my car to the lake, which is about 45 minutes away. On the way the the CEL is on intermittently, though the same rough tendency usually did not go away. A couple times though the problems and light went away completely, maybe for 20 minutes max. Its the same on the way back. On my way home the next day the problems and light never go away until i am about a mile from home. At this point i downshift going up a hill and the engine runs at about 4000 rpm, and when i shift back the CEL goes off and the engine returns completely to normal. The idle when the problem exhists is very ruff, and the engine generally feels like its not firing in all cylinders. As i mentioned before the engine is very rough at and below 2500 rpm when i give it some gas.
Thanks ahead of time, Teague

Pull the codes! The ECU will tell you why it turned on the CEL.

i feel like such an idiot. So i checked the codes, and among some others got the code for injector #2. I was about to come to you guys with advice on rplacing an injector when it occurred to me that this might be an idiot fix just like everything else that has gone wrong with my car. Turns out the harness on the injector had somehow gotten loose and was just sitting there on the injector, explaining the bad inconsistant operation of the injector. I have a new problem though, i cant reset my ecu. I have only tryed the method with the under dash connectors though, i'll do the "battery dance" tomorrow morning.

I am not fimilar with the under dash method. i always disconnect the battery. negative terminal for 30min, then start with all accessories off and don't touch the gas. let it idle for about 10-15min. shut it down, start back up and go have some fun. :)

pull fuse 16 EGI/TCU for 10 min. Will do the same thing as battery dance.

The connector method does work, if it won't clear or you keep getting the same code, there's a good chance there is a legitimate problem.

not necessarily......but if the sensor is bad bad, yes the light should go on. It may take a couple of cyles for the light to come on.

Try fuse 16 and then see if anything is still in there.
