depends on where you go, and how much work you do yourself.

if the shop does all the prep work and paints it for you, you're better off getting a new car

Re-paint jobs usually go for around $1800 or so. That's about the minimum you should expect to pay.

I've heard quotes upwards of $3k to get paint and body stuff fixed (rust, etc).

It's not worth it to get a new car if you want a good paintjob on a car you love.

to get a good quality paint job, with sanding, and priming the entire car, engine bay, door jams, etc, it'll be more than another legacy

Ahh, I didn't notice he had an N/A.

Buying another Legacy will still leave him with a 10+ year old car with 10+ year old paint.

true. depends on whether or not you're willing to spend that kind of money on something that doesnt affect the performance of your car, and only makes you more nervous driving it though

If just the bumpers are bad just have them repainted. shouldn't be too bad. I have my rear bumper repainted every other year as this shit breather upstairs from me has one of those dicksmack little Buicks from the early nineties with the pointed front bumper like a Viking long ship prow and he can't park right so I keep getting these spiderweb cracks in the center of my rear bumper. If I could only catch him in the act.

For the same reason and for bug and stone chips on the front, I wouldn't bother going anywhere really good for the job - maybe $150 or so.

Meguir's No. 9 Scratch and Swirl Remover
Clay Bar
Mother's Reflections

A great way to take 5-10 years off a paint job. But it requires a LOT of elbow grease and probably around 3 hours of your time, but the results are pretty impressive. It won't take out dents of scratches that made it through the paint, but everything else gets smoothed out pretty well.
