Irregular Idle + Check Engine Light ?

Post by BADWGN »

yesterday after a 2km trip, i turned off the car, the turbo timer kept it going, and i went to a nearbvy shop. i heard the idle start to stutter every 2-3 seconds. when i returned to the car, it was still idling weird and i noticed the check engine light on the dash. im takin it 2 a mechanic for some testing 2day, but was wandering if any of u have had the same sort of problem ? blocked fuel line ? something cogged ? im stumped. i turned the car off and let it sit for 15 seconds, and then turned it back on, it was sweet as...

If the CEL came on, check the code. Likely the idle control valve.

Yep, IAC valve. I had the same thing happen to my car. Sometimes it'd run perfectly, but then it would idle at 2k RPM's and fluctuate between 1500 and 2k. Then it would stall out and not idle at all.

I wanted it fixed ASAP so I just got a new valve for $400 from the stealership.

How did your mechanic change the idle?

Idle on our cars isn't meant to be adjustable... a lot of mechanics don't realize that idle is computer-controlled on modern Subarus (I even had one mechanic once tell me the IAC valve was "just a sensor" and that you're supposed to adjust the throttle stop screw).

Subaru's official position is that if you move any of the screws that control throttle plate or IAC valve calibration you're supposed to replace the part.
