Issues with wiring, I think...

Post by LaureltheQueen »

Okay, so on the touring wagon, there's a minor electrical problem. The right hand side of my HVAC lights are on sometimes, but a jostle(like sliding the temerature selector) will turn them out, and you have to whack the dash near them to make it get better. Same thing with my stereo, the rear speakers are fine, but the passenger side front speaker has some issues, and occasionally the drivers one does too, cutting out and getting static-y, but a thump on the side of the unit, or from the 1.5 DIN pocket below tends to help the problem out . now, I got that a little with the stock deck in there but not as bad... Is it something that can be easily fixed, or is it gonna be a PITA?

My HVAC lights do the same thing. It's a poor ground somewhere. Maybe taking the unit out and cleaning the contacts will do it, but I don't care enough to bother.

I had a problem with all my speakers cutting out. Took out the head unit and checked all the wires, wiggled the connections a bit, now the problem's gone. This was with an Alpine unit.

Is the unit aftermarket? If so, I'd guess it's bad contacts, too. I used to do the nice connectors for installs, but on the Legacy I got lazy and just stole some wire nuts from work. Haven't had a problem in almost 6 yrs. You have to get the right size for the smaller gauge, though.

No, I'm sure the wiring harness is good, Art's audio guy made it himself, and it was in the old car, before i got the tw. i had no problems with it in the old car, and i had the speakers cut out from time to time with the stock deck in the new car

Obviously check the wires to the speakers, but my guess is it's the wires that go to the cone.

Did you do anything in the dash? Usually unless something's in a corrosive environ or fooled with it doesn't go bad.

Do you have a meter to try and isolate it? If you can get it to go out, you can do reistance checks. The thing that sucks about intermittent issues, though, is exactly that - they're intermittent. Bastard wires!

I want to keep seeing your posts, so move them out of the way for us while you're checking those wires.

there's electrical tape on them, the reason i mentioned them is they look like they may have been F'ed with at some point, which COULD have something to do with the radio thing

When we get Tim to assist in moving the head unit down to the bottom for you, he could take a quick look at them. If it's something some well-crimped butt-connectors will fix, I'm sure he wouldn't mind helping out there. :)
