Questions about clutch replacement

Post by Gus S »

Hi,

It looks like the clutch on my '92 Legacy (my first manual) which I've owned for 2.5 years is toast. I first started noticing some slight slipping in 3rd gear about a month ago and it's gotten to the point where the engine now revs freely while very little power is sent to the wheels. I was wondering if the $117 clutch kit on ebay is a good idea. If not, do you have any suggestions other than local scrapyards? Also, around how many hours of labour can I expect for this job?

I bought the exedy clutch kit off of ebay for my Celica a few years back and i thought it was a very good OEM clutch. IMO if it is an exedy clutch and you aren't looking to make incredible HP numbers, it is very worth it.

The clutch I'm talking about is made by Valeo. I've heard of Valeo in the past , they make some OEM head/taillight units for Audi, but I have no idea about their clutches.

The Exedy clutch is also available for $22 more.

I am not looking for a performance part, just something reliable and durable.

I would give it a try. It doesn't sound like its much different from any other stock clutch. I would personally probably spring for the exedy because of my past experience with them, but either will do fine i would think.

thanks for the feedback guys.

One other question - is it necessary / a very good idea to change the flywheel as well? According to a local dealer, they don't replace clutches w/o replacing the flywheel as well - is this BS?

if nothing else resurface it. Assuming it's still got enough material left for a turn. If not you might want to think about replacing it.

The valleo clutch is doing just fine. Fairly grabby but I have not tried anything harsh with it yet as i just got my first 500 miles in on the new rings.

I just upgraded to a WRX clutch (Exedy Stage 1 and lightweight flywheel). Total for clutch and flywheel was $720. I wouldn't go back to a stock clutch for anything, the stock clutch is good, but slips a lot. I prefer the positive feel that the Exedy gives to the stock clutch.

R&R is 6 hours by Subaru, so use that to judge.

That's a pretty general statement, Phil. Compared to an Exedy maybe it seems slippy but for an oem clutch the turbo Legacy clutch is pretty robust and works very good. At the Subaru shootout last year and the Sport Compact shootout the next day I was out launching heavily modded rex's all day long doing 4k rpm clutch dump launches.

THe Valeo clutch held up well last night and I didnt smell any clutch until my last run, which was the 6th or 7th one. I was dropping the clutch on launch at 6000 rpm and slam shifting every gear.
