Looks like it would work just fine. From the picture it appears to function much the same as a boost controller, bleeding boost so that the map sensor never sees above the desired level.

I agree, MK.

The TurboSmart pneumatic FCD is either just a bleed valve or a ball-and-spring valve (or a combination of the two)... you could make the same thing yourself with like 10 bucks' worth of parts from the hardware store.

even though I don't have any need for it this idea intriques me :)

I assume it would be setup exactly like a mbc, where there'd be a spring with a ball one side of the parallel part of the T, and then have it inline with the map. Also a screw on top so you can set what boost the map will see. Or is there more to it?

Umm... not quite... I think what you'd want with a ball-and-spring is for the valve to leak high boost pressure away from the pressure sensor.

Something like this:

Code: Select all

            --------------------
manifold <-                :    -> sensor
            ------------+ +-----
                        |O|
                        |\|
                        |/|
                        |\+--
                        |/    -> atmosphere
                        |\+--
                        |#|
                        |#|
                        ### screw

The : is a restrictor. The O is the ball. The /\/\/ is the spring. The ### is the adjusting screw

oh okay, I see, as for it venting to the atmosphere, wouldn't that mess stuff up? Wouldn't you want to it reenter the intake somewhere?

Most mbcs also vent to air, i guess they're just betting that the small amount of leaked air won't make a difference.
