So I was at the dump today...

Post by legacy92ej22t »

and I found a Hutch Trickstar! I couldn't believe it. I thought it was an old GT pro performer or something but no, it was the Hutch Trickstar, object of so many of my childhood dreams. I just wanted the frame at first but once I got a hold of it I found that it looks like it was only ridden a few times, it's practicaly brand new with all the oem parts! I mean it's dirty and old, by no means mint, but man, it's sweet!

For those of you that have no idea what I'm talking about the Hutch Trickstar was the premier freestyle bmx bike of the early 80's. They are very rare, especially baby blue. Hehehe :D

HOLY SHIT! You found a trickstar! JESUS! Bring that shit over man!

What color was the one you found? Baby Blue?

You do realize that the trickstar, in mint condition, is worth about $1,000?

If you need some parts for restoration, let me know. I have quite a few distributors who can get old school parts, or know where I can get said parts.

Sweet. Only thing I ever see at the dump thats worth anything is brand new tires... I still dont know why someone would trow away tires with 5000 miles on them.

Cool - I've never even seen a Trickstar.

Laurel - I had the same idea for my velour '84 GL seats - one swivel and one rocking chair. Never got around to it.

This is a restored Trickstar. The originals had mag wheels, different bars (with a double brace), and a different set of cranks.

The brakes look original, the fork is also original.

That is the fabled pinkish-chromish finish bike.

I only know of three different colored Hutch bikes, and I've only seen 2 of them.

Chrome, Pink, and Baby Blue. I've seen the chrome and the pink in person, but I've never seen a baby blue. Matt's is a baby blue bike. Probably one of the rarest bikes there is.

I have a book from boyscouts (well, I don't think I have it any more), and it was for the BMX merit badge. The bike that the demo was done on? Hutch Trickstar (a chrome one). The trickstar was before my time as a tyke, so I didn't know about them until I really got into biking. It's weird because I was thinking about Hutch a few days ago, and wondering what ever happened to them. The Trickstar is one of the most sought after bikes in the history of bikes.

Like I said, a perfectly OEM Trickstar is worth an easy grand, maybe more. From what Matt tells me, his is in complete OEM trim, just needs a bit of lovin. That's a HELL of a find!

Haha, ya well, I almost took a dump in my pants when I saw it!

It's completely oem right down to the Hutch street tires that still have some of the little nobbies on 'em they're so new. When I get it cleaned up it should look pretty much new except for a few scratches. Oh ya, it has the oem mags too, they're graphite. :D

omfg! I was soooo envious when I read the first post of this thread!
I was totally into freestyle and BMX racing (I did a lot more BMX though, eventually progressing into what is now the whole mountain bike scene) back in the early to mid 80's.
Seeing that bike brings back some great memories...
I still have my Haro Master and my Pro Performer. Both bikes are a bit abused, and have been collecting dust for the past 10 years, but they're still in good shape. I may break 'em out for old times sake :P

Pics are coming soon. I already took some but they're on my friend camera. I'll try to get them up soon.

I cleaned it up a little tonight and it's not in quite as good a shape as I first thought but it's still in very, very good shape, just not mint. There are some scratches on the paint and the pedals are scratched on the ends, ya know, minor stuff. A couple friends both say they think it looks pretty much mint but I know it's not at "mint" status. Still, it's very rare and in very good shape so I'm stoked. I'm trying to decide if I want to just sell it and give Subarina some more love or keep it because it makes me smile to look at it...

Haha, ya, I was more of a BMX racer myself. My freestyle days were real early. I used to race ABA bmx for about 7 yrs. I even won the nationals twice in my age class and a couple gold cup qualifiers too. I never had the money (or good enough sponsors) to go to Oklahoma City for the actual Gold cup or Grand Nationals though.

Bikes, wow, I had sooo many growing up. I had an Elf for a while and raced a GT Pro-series for years . My Free Agent didn't last too long, had a Redline real early on that I destroyed and a dope Titan 24" that ended up getting stolen.

Speaking of Hutches, my buddy growing up in Oregon had a Black Hutch! They're even rarer then the Trickstar! I wonder if he still has it and how much it's worth...

Yeah, I'd say hang onto it as it was free anyway. Maybe restore it to mint if that doesn't devalue it. You could get touch up paint matched at an auto body place then layer it on with a thin brush and buff it to match. The pedals may be able to be cleaned up a little with some gentle smoothing of the scuffs. I wish I had that to bring to the bike show in Aug. - they get everything from velocipedes to 100 yr old racers, recumbents, 5 pass bikes, customs. and lowriders. Its a great time. I even got pictures of this 80+ yr old guy riding a rear-steer bike that he had to ride looking through a mirror that he designed decades previous at MIT.

I have been mildly contemplating getting a velocipede tattoo on my right shoulder blade. I doubt I ever will, but I think it'd be pretty cool.

 A velocipede and a high wheeler! The maniacs who used to ride those had like a club for them. They were the extreme games forerunners. When the modern-looking bike design took over they were originally deemed the safety bike since falling off didn't mean as many broken bones.

I saw a kid riding an 8-ft tall custom bike he made with several 20" frames welded together. He had to get on the roof of his truck to mount the thing.

It's in really good shape. I only did a quick 15 minute cleaning on it just to make it presentable, once it gets a full detail it will look really sharp! :D

I threw in a pic of my Klein just for kicks. Isn’t she pretty? :)
