As much as I hate to say it, you deserve that for not locking your car. I'm sorry to be so blunt, but people that don't lock their cars piss me off.

The subaru side of me is crying deep down inside for you though. Also you should be glad this is all that happened to it. It could've happened when you were parked somewhere more dangerous, and slid off the road or cliff, or into fast moving traffic, or over somebody. Or it could've been stolen or something. I mean don't get me wrong i feel for you, but like I always say, it could always be worse.

I agree you shouldnt HAVE to lock your car all the time, but if you don't you should expect the worse. That's the kind of world we live in. This is very similar to people who dont take care of their cars maintence and then down the road their tranny goes kaput or a wheel blows out while doing 70 on a crowded freeway killing others. If you don't ever try to prevent bad things from happening you should expect them to happen. You are always saying how stupid humanity is and we deserve to be governed by darwinism and all that stuff. Well guess what just happened to rsstiboy. Are you making an exception for him? I'll bet you now when he stops his car he will do as he said, e-brake, put it in gear, and lock the doors.

I disagree completely. It's nothing like someone poorly maintaining their car. Gone unchecked they may cause a problem to others, but in his case if there were no interference by an assmonkey then his car would still be parked where he left it (providing he didn't subsequently move it himself). Not living as a paranoid doesn't make you a criminal nor negligent. There are plenty of places still where people don't lock their doors at night and they don't have issues. Blaming it on them when the first shit breather does a home invasion is misdirected at best. Were we mice crunching through the brush with a callous disregard to snakes, I would agree, but we supposedly are superior beings with a society who's purpose is to offer protection to its citizens. What if the guy just ran in for a few seconds to take a piss anyway? What if he did lock his doors and this happened? Would it be his fault for not installing 3 antitheft devices and an alarm?

"Well, he WAS driving through Mexico, what does he expect for not having an armored vehicle with smoke screens and run flat tires? He deserved to get shot."

There's always an assumed risk. This goes for everything.

If you lock your car, you severely reduce the risk of some ass-hat messing your shit up.

Like in F1, the cars shouldn't be made slower to protect the drivers. They assume the risk of death everytime they drive. They know the consequences of their actions, and death is a hell of an incentive to take a turn with the right amount of speed. Associate death with the wrecking of your car, and you'll see my point. The worry of the car getting messed up is more than enough reason, at least for me, to lock your doors, leave it in gear, and hit the parking brake.

I lock my car EVERYWHERE, doesn't matter where it is. Even if I just run in to take a piss or grab a soda or pay for gas.

I do the same thing, but I'll defens a guy's right not to. I also check under my car, in bushes I pass, and in the backseat sometimes before getting in, but I wouldn't blame someone who got mugged because they didn't do that. I can see that yeah, he should've locked his doors, but to blame him more than the shitmonkey who perpetrated the crime is what I hate about this country. There's too much excusing the actions of the criminals and to some degree focusing the blame at him is contributing to that.

If he had not pulled the brake and just left it in gear, it would definitely be his fault, but since the action of someone else that caused this event, I'd say it was that person's fault. Taken from another angle, if I left the door to a hazardous room unlocked, but it had big warning signs all over it and someone went on there anyway and died, I would say it's the idiot who went in there who's to blame, not me for leaving it unlocked - the moron was still aware of the inherent danger and responsible for his own actions. The fact that in this country the dicksmack's family would likely sue me under such circumstances and win millions due to MY negligence only further proves my point since nearly everything the courts seem to do nowadays is backwards. We need to bring back accountability and common sense (if it ever even had it to begin with).

Though, to add another fun dimension to the argument, I don't think his insurance should pay for it. If they can't get the perp to cough up then he should have to eat the cost.

if he locked his doors and someone broke into his car then no its not his fault. but since he left it open for ANYONE to hop inside hell yes it's his fault. Are you saying that if you were to leave your keys in your car and it be stolen that it wouldnt be your fault? I don't care how many people leave their doors unlocked, they're idiots in my book. ANYONE can come inside their house and do whatever or take whatever until the alert the owners. If someone breakes in and kills those people is it not their own fault for leaving the door open? How can you say that stupid people dont deserve half the power they have and then support the fact that rsstiboy was being stupid/ignorant/not caring about leaving his door unlocked and saying it's not his fault? Just because I believe in taking precautions so something bad doesnt happen (and if I dont I am well aware of something bad happening and it will be my fault) doesn't make me paranoid. Honestly I dont care if he ran in to a take a piss or if he ran in a burning building to save his grandmother who has cancer. If he left his door unlocked he should expect something bad to happen. See I'm not saying its entirely rsstiboy's fault that this happened, but he should expect something like this to happen if he leaves his doors unlocked. If someone stole some change from his ashtray instead of running the car down the hill, would you still say it isnt his fault for leaving the car unlocked, that it's entirely the blame of the theif?

What is a brake going to do? The person could and mostl likely would still release the brake, which would make setting it useless. That'd be like saying if he would've put a note on the seat that said, "please don't jump in my car and move it" it would not have been his fault.

thanks for your thoughts guys, but I was in kind of a rush to get to work this morning and didn't have time to type out what happened in full,

i went to a friends place to have a look at his 8 week old staffy pup, 20 mins later I hear a loud bang and my alarm goes off, I thought someone was breaking into my car, when I got outside I discovered that a car had rolled into mine from 200ft up the road, not a small impact as indicated by the photos, the truth is we don't know who let the E.brake off or pushed the gearstick into neutral but it must be somebody who can't appreciate a nice motor vehicle! I'd be locked up by now If I knew who did it........

I wasn't the only car involved in the incident, he rolled down the street from under the street light in this photo....you can faintly see the front of another car up the street, he was parked in front of that.
