CD player install questions
What CD deck would you recommend replacing the stock unit with?
I am currently looking at this unit http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... pe=product from best buy and get a free installation with it
(budget is probably around 150)
also, the right rear speaker fades in and out sometimes and has frequent scratching/static noises. Most of the time it appears dead or extremely quiet. Anybody know what the problem could be?
Could I also upgrade the speakers? What would i need to add a subwoofer and better speakers?
Thanks

I have a Kenwood non-flipping face that's near 5yrs old and only skips on extremely rough roads. It's nothing fancy, but it works and it lasts. I think I paid about $150 when I got it.

I have a non flip face eclipse deck. I love it more then anything else on my car, It was about 400 bucks a few years ago.
I have about 2 grand invested in stereo but you could spend anywhere from a couple hundred all the way up to ten thousand on stereo. If you have the cash i would go with a nice deck(you pay for what you get) As well as replace the factory speakers If you can get an amp for the speakers that always sounds good. WE have a prety standard speaker size, 6 1/2inch. So you can get any kind of speaker. I like my 3 way speakers wth tweaters attatched. Alot cheaper then componants.
Add a sub and another amp and you got one hell of a system. Pm me if you need any help putting it in. Its satisfactory to know you did it your self.

I have a Pioneer DEH -860MP. I paid about $525 a few months ago for it, and it's pretty sweet. It's a really really nice deck that does just about everything from self image the sound, to controlling every aspect of my sub.
Install it yourself, you learn a lot about how to lose screws when you do that.

I have the pioneer DEH 8600. The features are amazing. Pioneer, Alpine and Kenwood make the best decks in my opinion. (I work for Best Buy) Infinity and Eclipse both make excellent 6.5" speakers for our cars. If you do end up wanting a sub in the future, make sure the deck you get has pre-outs for an amplifier.

I beg to differ. Eclipse is one of the few companies that make a deck without the goofy detatchable face.I have always found that very tacky and cheap. Eclipse have the system in them where if they get stolen they wont work A, and B you get a new one for free. You cant go wrong. The prices have dropped on them now too. Just make sure that the buttons all light up. The one i my GF eclipse doesnt light up any of the radio preset buttons...

Same deck as me, but I've got the "premeir" version! It's a super sweet deck. I've been meaning to make my own screen saver one of these days.TurboSubie91 wrote:I have the pioneer DEH 8600. I had a Pioneer and a JVC and neither lasted more than 3 yrs. I'm not a stereo fanatic as this car's too loud for it to matter so I'm not sure how great it is, but it has the amp outs (unused) and you can switch CDs without flipping the face. I personally hate the flip-faces and think they look cheesy and out of place in any car as well as the annoyance when changing CDs. Unfortunately it seems that's mostly what's out there now so I hope this one will last a lot longer.

I've got no problem with flip-faces, as long as it's well done.
I like having the extra display room offered by a flip-face. I don't mind the CD changing thing. You gotta hit Eject anyway, so the face flips down for you, ejects the CD and you load a new one, then it flips up for you.

I'm too impatient as it is to deal with the face movement. You should hear me swearing at the thing while it takes a whole 3 secs to eject. I sit there with my hand near it clasping my hands open and close in wait like an infant with its grabbing reflex.

Not to mention thats another 3 seconds that your probably not paying attention to the road in front of you...
I wrecked my dads new saab 3 years ago because the deck was almost as low as the shifter. I was paying more attention to the stereo than the road.

Nice to see you can get a "disposable" deck like an Aiwa WITH MP3 playback for only 150! That's cool.
I bought an AIWA 3 or 4 years ago expecting it to break in a year.... Still kicking just fine
... I wish it would break though so I can upgrade, and get some mp3 action going on. Also, I can't stand the flashy blue pulsating lights every time I adjust the volume.
I got one of these for my SS. It looks and works great, and the seller was good to me. Fast shipping even near x-mas. He has a typo though.. it fits "plug and play in 95 and up subarus, not 93. I had to snatch a clip from a 96 impreza in the JY to make it clip in.

SO... MR TurboSubie91... You work for Best Buy? I Really want to get a copy of the promo CD they play in there lately. You know, the one you hear when testing out all the car audio stuff on the wall. (It's Just instrumental versions of popular hip hop stuff If I'm not mistaken.)
Nearly every time I'm in there I try to get someone to hook me up with it, but to no avail. (Wussys won't go steal from thier paycheck providers to give me free stuff!

I never have to look from the road to switch CDs - its why I love the stereo (and the '90-91's for the under ashtray pocket) so much.

i have a pioneer deh 7400 mp3 deck, and i love it. it's closed out, but cost just over $250 i believe. I love it to death, great for the money. If you have lots of music, i'd definitely suggest an mp3 deck, it's the best, i have all of my songs on 4 cd's keeps my load a bit smaller.

I've gotten used to my CD player so much, that it's no big worry to hit eject and swap a CD without taking my eyes off the road.
And in the grand scheme of things, the 3 extra seconds isn't any big deal. It's actually soothing, a nice reminder to slow my life down, and to not rush everything.

Laurel, have you noticed any decresase in sound quality? My gf's eclipse has the MP3 and it just doenst seem to sound nearly as good. All the songs are as high in quality as they can be too. Maybe i wouldnt notice it except i have to turn the volume way up and the trebble way down to get any decent bass.

CD quality is 328kbps or more.
FWIW, I can blast MP3 without any problems. Same goes for regular CD's.
Back when I had my old system, I could blast Sattelite radio too (which was, in fact, CD quality). I want Sattelite again

I've got a Pioneer DEH-P6500.
It's been working well for me. All the controls light up green (and somewhat match the gauges) and it has the OEL display with a rally racing visualization. The general 'look' fits fairly well with the rest of the interior, so I don't even bother removing the face most of the time.
The sound quality is good, and I love all the various options it has. I was going to pick up an RCA adapter so I can hook my MD player through it also.
One other thing: the clock stays on when you turn the unit off. My last deck didn't have any sort of 'all sources off' mode and the clock would turn off when the unit was off.
Unfortunately, I believe they are taking this model out of production.

Art switched my pioneer 740 for the pioneer premier 940... apparently better cost to resale value on my old deck, so that one's getting sold instead. I love it, but the face keeps falling off due to the radio bezel

I looked at the 940 (that's the motorized one that has the screen in the rear, right?) but I hated the whole slide down method. Would have annoyed me when I was shifting. Super cool headunit though.

Well, technically, it slides AND folds in one motion.LaureltheQueen wrote:nope, that's not the one

If you don't have that resolved before you come back up, we'll "trim the trim" to give it room to pivot. I'm thinking that a back-end trim (like using a coping saw on baseboard moulding in homes) will do the trick, and you'll hardly even know it's been trimmed.

It's an awesome deck, and despite what you may have thought when we swapped it out, I'd rather see you enjoy it than have to sell it for almost 1/3 of what I paid. Besides. . . user-uploaded movies and backgrounds for the OEL display kick ass.
