FMIC on 94 legacy wagon

Post by magicmike »

Hi guys,
I have heard that some cutting must be done to get a FMIC on a legacy. Does anyone know how much cutting is involved and WHAT is cut exactly? I'm assuming the actuall steel bumber behind the cover is what gets cut but I'm not sure. Would it have to be "Trimmed" down so its thinner, or would a whole section be cut out? Also, does the bumper cover need to be modified. Are there any links to this being done with photos??? Any help in this matter would be greatly apriaciated. Thanks,
Mike

I don't think very many people have them. you will probably have to modify the bumper and bumper beam. here are two pics i found:

ooooh!, That actually gives me a pretty good idea. I was considering an IC with the inlet and outlet on the same side and running both tubes along the passenger side. I didn't see any room on the drivers side at all. Do you know if you can get away with a plastic tubing of some sort or if you have to go with aluminum. Also, do you know if I could get away with 2.5 inch tubing ? I am hoping to be running 20 lbs when I'm through. Thanks alot,

Mike

another idea for you is to reverese your intake manifold and have very little ducting to the intercooler. that is what I am doing. just waiting for aerotech to send me pics of their bumpers.

hey kelley, i also always liked the idea of a reversed manifold. http://www.imprezer.com Alex did it to his wrx. you see he had to remove his a/c and slide over the alternator. :o

I'm guessing you bought the car used. Its practically impossible to clean up an unmaintained engine compartment. I have the motor out of mine at the moment. While out I pressure washed the whole compartment. It still looks dirty to me. I hate to see rusty brackets and dirt. I currently drive a 95 civic. I bought it new and every time I wash it I spray some "simple green" in the whole engine compartment and on the underside of the hood and hose it down. Now with 160k miles on it you could still eat off the motor. Any way if thats your car with the FMIC on it let me know who the manufactuer is and for what model its for. That would be great.

Just a little FYI about simple green and aluminum......they're not good to mix......it can cause issues to the aluminum.....or so I've been told anyway.

Well, I've been using simple green on my engine bay for 7 years now and considering the motor is all aluminum and my big shiny air intake is aluminum, I havent seen any form of damage or anything......

You're right Magicmike, I've bought my car used (only two months ago) with the engine bay in that condition...

About my fmic setup, it was already done when I bought the car. The intercooler is from a mitsubishi starion. The only cutting I'm aware of is that the hood release clamp (the one moved from inside the car) has been removed, I now rely on hood pins, and the AC has been removed. But this setup has been done two owners ago, there's probably a lot I don't know about this car.

I think I'll take a drive over to the local scrap yard and see if I can find a car with an IC on it. Weather permitting of course, its friggin cold outside!!!! If I find something that looks close I'll buy it and keep you guys posted. I definately will be looking for something that is front mount.

Thanks,

Mike

The aviation guys have been swapping around intake manifolds for some time. This is one example I found by searching for Subaru alpha-numeric engine designations ie EJ20, EJ22 etc.

The amount of piping you have to run is reduced. Thought this was obvious. See page one of this thread....
