possibly buying a '91 legacy

Post by dave_t »

i found a '91 legacy non-turbo sedan with the 5-spd for $1000 i was told to offer $750 and pay no more than $850 (canadian)

just by sitting in the car, driving around the lot, and looking at it i know it needs some work.... 4 tires, front suspension, and the ABS light is on (i don't know what it means though)... and thats all i know so far... can you guys tell me what i should be looking for?

I would say you should check out the condition of the frame for rust for one thing.

Either the valve cover gaskets are leaking or have been replaced, one or the other. Check the knock sensor (look on the block under the driver's side of the throttle body), they're notorious for cracking, and if it has a grey connector you should replace it anyway. Other than being sure routine maintenance has been done, timing belts changed, just judge the obvious stuff...

Worst case you can part it out and sell it for more than that.

subylvr2212, may I ask why should a knock sensor with the gray connector be replaced?

It's an older design prone to failure.
