do rear AWD springs work on FWD cars?

Struts, spring, anti-rollbars, braces and the like.

do rear AWD springs work on FWD cars?

Post by greg donovan »

i know i may need to change my upper mounts on the rear since i have the old tapered rear springs on my 90 sedan.

so, the question is can i use AWD springs on the rear of my sedan?

the GC chassis RS springs look they would be a nice match for the GR-2 and a sway bar upgrade. my current spring rates are a pathetic 123 front and 129 rear. if AWD stuff works the GC RS has 157 front and 149 rear.

thanks again for the suspension sticky data!

they should fit....as long as you have proper top mounts for springs they should work. Not sure how the ride height will be though.

the rear awd struts are shorter than the FWD ones, arent they?

but the perch is in the same spot with respect to the body, i think.

do you mean the struts wont fit? i know that.

or do you mean the springs wont fit? that i dont know.

what i was getting at is the perch on a awd strut the same distance from the top as it is on a FWD rear strut?

the perch would then be closer to the bottom on the awd strut than on the fwd strut.

i think the 90 awd and fwd strut set ups were the same. Don't quote me.

Yup, that came as a surprise.

LOOK....struts are different.....springs I think you can change without too much issues as long as the top mount is the same.

I got my car done today, and ride height is pretty much identical to what is was before. Granted I have aftermarket springs....so that may not be an accurate comparison.

Just to let you know.....I put the FWD rear end on the donor legacy today.

AWD struts will NOT bolt up to the FWD rear hubs. However FWD rear springs WILL fit on FWD rear struts.

Ride height looks ok.....

huh?

i know that the FWD rear strut bolts in the place where the rear halfshaft lives on the AWD rear hub.

are you trying to say that the rear FWD springs work on the rear AWD struts?

sorry.....brain fart when I originally typed the message.

I edited it. I was trying to say you can't put AWD rear struts on FWD rear hubs.

And that AWD rear springs work on FWD rear struts.

cool.

so the FWD rear struts are longer? yet the perch is in the same relative position as on the AWD rear?

that means my spring options arent as limited as i feared.

yeah they're going to be longer, but that's not why they didn't fit. The bottom housing is different and won't clear how the fwd rear hub is setup.
