658 turbo cars? ( Laughing)

Post by dscoobydoo »

Ok, like all of you, I saw the "supposed" build numbers on the Legacy turbos.

I started to pay attention to the cars more and do a little math.

Ok, I live between Spokane, WA and the Canadian Border.
Just in my small travels, I have seen 2 turbo wagons, and 6 turbo sedans. Hell, I work with 20 people and there are 2 turbo sedans here.

I would think those numbers need another zero.
My car came from Pennsylvania.

I have seen about 20 cars in junkyards that are turbos. That does not count the number that have been there before and are now dog bowls.

Yes, we do have rare cars, but even the Galant VR4 had a production run of 3000, and that was only 2 years and no wagons.

Too bad our VINs do not designate anything special, then maybe we could find out how many were truly made. But being that our VINs start with J, only Fuji Heavy Industries knows the real numbers
Yes I have too many Subarus
No you can't have one

That's really odd. It's extremely rare that I'll see another Turbo. I've seen 3 that belonged to someone I didn't know, and only one in a Junkyard.

If I ever see one parked, or if I see are REALLY clean BC/BF, I have been trying to leave bbs.legacycentral.org notes on the winshields in hopes that they will join.

I've seen about 9 turbo legs in the last year. including mine, including the one in a junkyard.

The thing is, fuji heavy industries does not know the numbers, that's why this is so frustrating

here in fargo there are 2 maybe 3. and i know of at least 5 in the twin cites (minneapolis st paul) and obviously i dont know everyone but i would believe there should be another zero added. then it would makke sense. or those are numbers by color and there are 658 maroon ones or whatever.

I know of at least 12 that have been right around here in central PA.

Besides Phils 94 down in MD, I know of at least 2 others that are in yards and the Boostjunkie '91 SS (in VA) that is patiently waiting for Vikash to resurrect it. ;) Plus he has a '93 SS. Brat4x4 has one, NemesisEJ22T has one. Dave has one in Allentown, and IIRC there is at least another 3-4 Legacy turbo members from PA here on the bbs.

So, that's 23-24 that I know of within 250 miles of me here in Williamsport alone. :)

I dont think the numbers are that far off guys. I mean think about it. We have 6 people here in this thread so far with a total of less than 10 eye witness accounts per person average. Thats only 60 cars and we are talking the most we have ever seen. I dont think that we could find 60 people on here living all around the states that can say they have seen more than 10 turbos. I have only seen 2 others myself here in RI and one of them had Mass plates. 600 does not sound like alot in the grand scope of things but it is still alot. I do think that I dont really believe anything without some hard data to support it but I also think that 600 ish is not all that laughable....

If Canada counts, I know of a bunch. And I've seen a couple around the city that aren't members of either this board or the Toronto Subaru Club.

An account of the Turbos I've seen:

The first one I ever saw was a 92-94 burgundy SS for sale in an auto finder freebie. This was before I had a car, back in 99ish. So the price was still around $8k, which was out of my range. I was still looking for a turbo Mitsu anyway.

Then I saw a 92-94 TW driving downtown, burgundy. I think this is the same TW I saw a few weeks ago at a repair shop. I asked the mechanic about it, but he was barely able to speak he was so dumb . That car only has ~95k miles on it too!

I heard about a 91 SS for sale here locally, black with shot paint, 107k, $800!!!! If only I had the dough I woulda bought it immediately. But it eventually sold, to my friend renmaxi who has since painted it completely white, put gold rims on it, and put a straight pipe on it

And the 91 SS that Opie pulled his EJ22T out of, that's the same car I got my rear swaybar from.

And that's it. So, while I find those numbers to be a little ridiculous, I can't say I have anything to disprove them with.

OK, yes I had seen the sticky, and I had also come across the numbers.

Then short of offending anyone, I should have titled it:
"Seen alot of Turbos lately".

They are not very popular, but because I am paying a lot MORE attention, I am seeing more of them.

But most (car's that I see) owners seem to be 30's to 50's men. And sadly, the cars are not in the best shape.

I've seen 2 92 turbo wagons in person, and another 2 on the internet. If I remember correctly, subaru stated either 4 or 6 automatics in 92. Now I think we have at least 3 others with 92 auto turbos. if so, then subaru's numbers have already been disproved

My mom had a silver 92 Touring Wagon, but it was totaled. So that's another one.

Subaru so poorly marketed the Turbo Legacy, it wouldn't surprise me if there were under 2,000 total units for all 4 years of production.

I really don't think theose numbers can be right. I have seen 5 Turbos including one in a junkyard and not including other members here. I think of it this way, i have had my Celica for almost 5 years, and in that time i have seen 3 All-Trac Celicas (2500 total were imported here). Trust me, i really look for All-Tracs. And in the year and a half i have had my Legacy, i've seen 5 turbos. If those numbers are right, then the turbos must have been only sold in PA, WA and CO.

I live in the bay area, theres a million people in san jose, and prolly 6 mill in the surrounding cities. I've seen 1 turbo other than eastbay's in the 2 years i've lived here. This is an area where you'd expect to see unusual cars; a lot of people have money. I wouldn't be surprised if LA had the same concentration of turboes. More than 10 million people. Thats a hell of a lot of cars.

Something like 350 Toyota 2000GTs were made and of all the consours and vintage races I've been to I've only seen 1. That's the closest example I can think of off the top of my head to prove a point.

That's probably why you don't see them driving 10 year old Turbo Legacys ;). The really rich don't care about reliability.

That's why I don't see any in my imediate area. I live in one of the richest counties in the country, and just outside the second wealthiest zip code in the nation (Potomac Maryland, second only to Beverly Hills 90210 in per capita income).

Vikash will likely agree with me, that when I go "downtown" (Bethesda, Potomac, Northern Virginia, and the Northern DC area) I see more Ferrari's in a day than I see Turbo Legacys (that aren't mine) in a month.

There are several turbo Legacys as college commuters around here. I also see more Ferraris than turbo Legs, but for the same reason of wealth. There's a guy who drives a 365 GTC all the time as well as the usual V8s, Maseratis, and the occasional Lamborghini.

Steve, you probably know. What's the worth and rarity of a Maserati? Someone down the street has one, and I've NEVER seen one of these on the road. I saw it parked in the driveway (next to a Caddy Escalade EXT). A Maserati and an Escalade in the driveway, I wonder what's in the garage.

When I went skiing like 2 years ago in a bigass snow storm, I was in my dad's XTerra plowing through 6" of highway slush.

There was a Yellow Porsche Boxter in a ditch, and a, wait for it..., Ferrari 550 Maranello on the side of the road a few miles up. WTF!? I almost cried when I saw that. Why would you drive a 550 in weather like THAT!? I'm shocked that it got that far.

I've owned one Legacy turbo and seen 5 others I can think of off the top of my head.
While using sightings to guess production numbers, maybe we should keep in mind the areas of the country where Subarus typically sold well. (Not really including WRX)
Compare Subaru consentration in the NW to Texas, for example.
