Throttle body coolant bypass... it could net you a horsepower or two and costs on the order of a couple bucks.

Has the engine had a tuneup recently? It's not a modification exactly, but putting in a fresh set of NGK copper spark plugs and a new set of OEM plug wires, and replacing the air filter and fuel filter and maybe PCV valve could make the car run better.

A bottle of techron injector cleaner and a tank of 89 octane chevron is always nice.

I second everyone's statements. The throttle body bypass is especially helpful in hot weather. The car just seems to run better overall. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a horsepower gain, but a worthwhile mod that will cost you a max of about $7-$8...

Also, a tune-up as vrg3 mentioned and 89 octane gas with some GOOD injector cleaner like ciper stated will be beneficial. I emphasize good because Prestone and STP and all them are crap, no benefit at all...

Steps to do what? The throttle body bypass mod is discussed in this thread:

As for a tuneup, I don't think it's been written up here but there are some writeups on www.scoobymods.com for other Subarus that are similar.
