Rear Wheel Bearings

Post by gilesfamily »

Hi,

I've got rear wheel bearing noise so am planning on replacing the bearings myself after being quoted £270 per side from the local Subaru dealer. I am trying to find out what parts I need, any experience anyone has got would be appreciated. The car is a year 2000 2.5 GX saloon. I have spoken to the Subaru garage about parts and apparently I need three bits, a hub unit that contains the new bearing (£60), the hub itself (£71) that the wheel actually bolts to and lastly the new axle nut £3. I then have to press the two units together etc... What I can't understand is why I need the the hub, why can't I use the old one after pressing it out of the existing hub bearing. Anyone got any ideas or experiance changin the rear wheel bearings :?: ?

regards,
Andy

You don't need a new hub. You can re-use the existing. The bearing is pressed onto the hub piece. If you damage the hub or can't get the bearing off the hub, then you'll need a new one.

Other thing I would probably look at possibly replacing is the wheel bearing seals.
