can any one tell me what is going on,
i can put it in reverse but the car wont move, if i put in first gear and move a little then the car might go in reverse.
if i let the car sit and try to put it in reverse then it wont work till it warms up or drive it.
A. is my tranny on the way out
B. get a stick of C4 and let the whole car R.I.P.
i have blow 6 trannys up and i have never seen this problem or heard of it ANYONE.

I think when you shift into reverse and the car doesn't move, you're not actually in reverse. Make sure you push the lever all the way into reverse.
If it doesn't go all the way, don't force it. It's possible that the gears aren't lining up right, and in that situation the right thing to do is what you're doing -- shifting into another gear and letting things move a little, or just engaging the clutch a little in neutral for the same effect.

Even my rebuilt MT doesn't like reverse. From having them open, I think I know why. The linkage arms that engage the reverse idler gear are short and don’t provide a whole lot of leverage, so the gears have to be lined up pretty well (especially when its cold). Also, the two gears that need to mesh together both have square cut teeth, so they need to line up nicely in order to engage. Personally, every 5MT I've driven has had this problem when it gets a little older... so I don’t think it’s a sign of a tranny on its way out at all (I would pay attention to other tell-tail signs before I considered this).
When you put it in R, do you get a nice solid pop/click/clank? It should be louder than any other shift (the clank is the idler gear hitting the housing, incidentally. I played with it, shifting it in and out, for about 20 mins when I had the last one open, just to see what made the noise.). Check the metal sleeve that slips over the little rubber penis of your shifter (the piece the shift knob threads onto, underneath the boot). It tends to slide up if you pull on the shift a bit, and the rubber makes shifts feel mushy (god I hate that thing). If it’s slid up, that may be why you can’t shift solidly into reverse. If you have a different shifter, never mind I guess.
Try sticking it in first before you try R, that usually works for me.

thanks vrg3 an fishbone79 i checked what you guys where talking about and it was the problem. it didnt help that i have a wrx link plus a wrx short shift kit in there.
the car lives till it brakes agian
JasonGrahn my car is tuned to the max, but i do no now why my trannys keep blowing up, cuz i got to much HP for the snow. in the winter it runs fine just after winter when the tires get to stick to the ground it brakes cuz it wheres it self out all winter slipping around no more winter driving for me.
its time i bring out the guns its all black 88 323gtx my first car, with 220hp blizzaks who wants it.
