AWD -> FWD

Post by BAC5.2 »

OK, a friend of mine has a 93 Impreza.

He bought a 91 Legacy AWD and used all of the AWD stuff from that to convert his 93 Impreza from FWD to AWD.

But he needs to peice the Legacy back together and sell it.

SO, today, we were going to bolt the FWD tranny from his Impreza into the Legacy in place of the AWD tranny.

I'm sure you all know where I am going with this.

As you guys know, there is the H-looking brace on the AWD cars, with corresponding bolts in the chassis for them.

Problem: His FWD tranny has the FWD tranny mount, and there is no where that this bolts up to on the AWD chassis. The AWD tranny mount, obviously, does not bolt to the FWD transmission.

SO....

How can we get the FWD tranny into a previously AWD car?

The tranny dropped out of his Impreza just fine, and the AWD tranny (from the Legacy, and then a different RS tranny) popped right in.

So, how do I convert the AWD car to FWD?

Without going out and under in the f'n dark and cold, I'm pretty sure there's a different mount. May be Legacy specific, but should be easy to get.

You still have the FWD crossmember and mounts right? Why wont those mount to the chassis? What year impreza? I know the crossmember was different on early impreza's but I dont know what's different about it.

The holes are there to bolt up the FWD trans crossmember. There should be little plastic plugs. Remove those, and the bolt holes will be there.

I did this on my car for all the stuff I swapped over.
