WRX Uppipe compatability?

Post by Drakar »

Well from my last post I plan on a full SS exhaust downpipe all the way back, in the next few months and figured if my exhaust will be in pieces what about the uppipe??

Will a WRX piece fit, is there any benefit, I haven't looked yet but Im just wondering is it the same exhaust piping as the rest or is it a cast iron type deal from the manifold?

An uppipe meant for a WRX will fit. The exhaust setup at the front of our cars is very similar to a WRX's: one manifold on each cylinder bank, a cross-pipe between them, and the uppipe attaches to the passenger side manifold. The manifolds are cast iron and the cross-pipe is stainless steel. I don't know for sure what the up-pipe is made of.

I have an uppipe made by CES for the WRX on my car right now. It sits very close to the passenger side cylinder head, but works fine.

Many uppipes for WRXes (including this one) have a bung for the WRX's stock EGT sensor. You need to plug it up. I used an oil drain plug from a 1993 Nissan Sentra and a 12mm copper washer.

Our stock uppipes flow much better than the stock WRX ones, because WRX ones have catalytic converters in them. I would also venture to guess that many aftermarket WRX uppipes are probably very similar to our stock ones in performance.

Thx, didn't know ours where already one of the best, I guess the only benefit would be to switch to a stainless steel if ours is only mild.

Why would swaping to stainless steel be worth the cost of a new aftermarket uppipe?

do our stock up pipes not rust away like normal exhaust?

I was thinking that if it is like a regular exhaust that does rust away, then when I put in the full turbo back which will be Stainless, I would do the up pipe?

Well, my stock one had 108,000 miles on it, and it wasn't rusted away. The one I just installed (from VRG3), had like 140ish on it, and was in great shape.

The uppipe isn't really exposed to the elements as much as the other pipes are. My stock turbo-back just had mild surface rust, and the car lived in CT for it's life.

Actually, now that I think about it, the stock uppipe is cast iron. I will check tomorrow when I clean up the garage.

The engine I bought had sat in water for a while as the oil pan was badly rotted, but the crosspipe had only minimal surface rust. The uppipe is the same material, which seems to me to be stainless.
