I want to get my baby cleaned up and lookin nice ^_^

Post by THAWA »

I was tired of lookin at all the misc trash in my car and dust sitting on it so I took it to a touchless wash and vacuumed it yesterday. Then when I got home I realized how pretty she was. So now I wanna fix her up a bit cosmetically. Some things I want to do are: Window tint (any suggestions on what kind?), Get the dents out of the door(from that hit n run I'll get that guy back one day ), The previous owner tried to cover up scratches with that red car paint crap that looks like nail polish looks like crap upclose so what can I do to take that stuff off. Probably some new wheels not sure about that. And would a spoiler from one of the newer years fit on my car? I'm not really conscerned with the performance side of the spoiler more the cosmetics :D. I also want to dress up the interior but cant decided on a decent color scheme, the inside is gray and the outside is red but I can't see many other colors fitting in. Anyone think blue would look good in there? or green maybe?

On the interior, black, red and grey might look good. Like black and red seats and black floor mats or something. Black goes with everything.

Are you talking about the interior or exterior color? My car's a too rare dark blue and it's one of the reasons I settled for fwd (5MT 4wd's are hard to find around here and there were none with the turbo). Plus it has no roof rack, which makes moving my kayak a little inconvenient, but I think it looks so much better. If you're talking about the interior color, I tried that interior paint on the ugly beige dash of my '84 GL (to change it to black) and it worked better than regular paint (good coverage, shined up with regular vinyl protectant), but still scratched off relatively easy. Maybe some newer stuff would work better. Never tried dying the seats. I think green and red would look a little too Christmas-like unless you changed the exterior too.

I'd just like to comment on the interior color sceme. Personaly I think its a bit tacky. What I'm refering to is when people take all sorts of plastic pieces off the dash and doors and spray paint them. It makes me cringe. What I think is so great about our cars is that they do not draw any attention at all. They are the perfect sleepers. But on the other hand, you should do what ever you think you would like. If you think it would cool then go for it.

if you get tint. make sure you drop the couple extra bucks for the Premium stuff. They have metallic fibers or something in it and it is the bomb. Mine is SolarGuard or something like that, oh and make sure you have it professionally done. NEVER get the cheap stuff.

I hear what you are saying mike, i used to know a guy with a yellow mr2 he spraypainted some of the things on the inside and it looked alright form far away but when you were in the car it looked pretty bad. I do however think I've found a way around that though. Vinyl dye, this stuff works great on plastic and things like that. I used it on my keyboard mouse and monitor looked so good because it actually dyes the color of the plastic instead of painting it. At anyrate i suppose it could be intersting to see what a lil red can do to dress it up a bit. Or maybe I should just leave well enough alone.
What about the exterior? Are the spoilers pretty much universal for the leg's? I'm sure ill have to do some cable managment and drilling to get it mounted.

Yeah our last car had that cheapo stuff, it looked so rotten. What do the metallic fibers do? Anything to protect agaisnt the heat or something or just give it a better look?

You cant see the metal, it is ground very fine. It acts as a reflector against the UV light. You cant buy good stuff at the parts store. Expect to pay at leaste 2-3 dollars a foot at a place that does window tinting. They will be glad to sell you the tint because after you screw it up they will get more of your money to retint your car for you the second time. I speak from experience here guys (and gal). I was a proff. tinter for over 5 years which I have mentioned in the past. I only used SunGuard. It is not easy to do (although I made it look pretty easy  ). Even if you managed to get a piece cut correctly you would not be able to get it on without scratching it or creasing it in someway, and then if you get it on ok there will be a ton of "dirt" in it. I used to tint in a closed garage and I would not let anyone even walk around near the car I was doing so that they wouldn't kick up any dust. I did it for a long time and even I woud have to redo a window because a hair would get in there or somthing. Trust me, just save up and have it done. Expect to pay around 200 give or take a little.

THAWA your From sacramento??? I just read it from one of your other posts. Awsome, I'm from there. Hey I got a GREAT tinter lead for you. He's in the Antelope area. (Near Roseville) I got mine done there and absolutely love it. He did World's Gym with just his son and he does all his own stuff. I guess people from reno and over there come to him all the time for their tint. My cousin led me to him and he only does buisness through referals. He'll give you a great deal too. I got 20's on the front and 50's from the rear seats back for 100 bucks. It was a great deal. I'll pm you my cousins number and you can get the tinter info from her.

Also if there is any bubbling or problems he'll fix it for free.

not trying to be a stickler but the lower the number the darker the tint. so you probably have 20 on the back and 50 on your front doors. They rate the tint in the percent of light that can pass through it.

Awesome ryan, glad to meet another hometown person :D That sounds like a good deal. Bout how long did it take him to do it? Antelope's kinda far from me but even if i could get it for 150 I'd be happy 8). Should I just tell him ryan sent me?

Also mike or ryan would either of you know the legal limit for tint in cali or a reliable site i can check?

I have a ruby red wagon with a grey interior, My bf's got wrx seats for my birthday, so I've sorta been forced into blue accents. It's okay though, because I was originally planning on purple or blue pearl when I do the paint. I think a dark metallic blue would look pretty spiffy if the color is what i'm imagining. Just dont go crazy and make it look all patriotic :?

Is that how they rate it? Hmm, ok. My front windows are pretty light compared to the back ones. So maybe they are 20's in back.

Well THAWA all I know is that my back is REAL dark. I can still see out them at night to back up, but in some places it can be tough. I like it, though. You really can't see into them, unless the light is just right. I don't think it is as dark as limo tint, but it is close. And yes, it is legal in California. The only thing illegal about my tint is the fact that it is tinted on the front windows. The guy that did it tinted his front window also, as in the one that has the rearview mirror on it. That way it looked like his side windows weren't tinted as dark. He said he'd get headackes driving around with it that way for the first couple days until it smoothed out.

It took a couple hours I think. I had to run some errends though while he did it so I came back after he'd been done for a while.

My bad, haha not sure what I was thinking. Sorry, I have 50's on the front and 5's on the backseat's back. So all my rear's are 5%. Yes, that is legal also.

I got the guy's number, and he is getting buisy so give him a call and arrange a time when you can go see him. I'll pm the number to ya.

Damn it, you got a BF ;)

Haha anyway... I have mixed opinions on Subaru interiors. Even though their materials feel very cheap and the colors are nothing to get excited about, I find them very functional and VERY hard-wearing. I do like the driver-oriented style of the Legacy, and the XT's interior is a story in itself :D

I feel that I have put my Legacy's interior through the ringer, and all it has to show for it is a small tear in the bolstering of the driver's seat from entering/exiting, and a few removable stains. I have carried everything from TV's and lawn chairs to old car parts (from my car and others) in the back seat and it is still very clean and has no signs of serious use...

But the color is quite drab, yes I agree. But people, please don't "rice" your cars out. If I were to color some parts of my interior, I would simply get a body shop to professionally paint them with my color code. That would at least look classy, not cheap...

The interior quality appearance seems to be color dependent. My sister had a '93 in beige which looked cheap, while the dark blue in mine looks like better quality material (just don't touch the hard plastic). Very hard wearing as all but the carpets and driver's door look like new and I moved all my belongings in it (took a while, but I refused to get a truck) as well as plenty of other junk.

What about gague lights? Has anyone changed the bulbs or the film to a red color?

What about the spoiler? Are all the trunk lids the same size meaning a spoiler from any year will fit?

Ryan do you have any pics?

I have a couple, but they are before the tint. I'll try and get some photos of it currently and put them up for ya. I also have wrx rims, which look nicer on our cars than the wrx's in my opinion.

My automatic shifter lights died the night after I rolled over to 200k.

When I do my wrx/manual tranny swap, and I hafta replace the guage cluster, I think I'll change the color to the indigo that newer VW's have. While its nowhere near as functional as red, it'll look purdier, and match with my blue theme. I'd assume its just a matter of having the right materials and time/patience. I'd reccommend going to like, Offtopic.net or Honda-tech or superhondaonline or honda-acura.net or something to pull a DIY out to do that. :)

This is what I meant by dressing up the interior, Image
There isnt white all over the place but gives it that hint of, "oh yeah I'm sitting in a white car" Only with mine it will be red instead of white. Maybe i should try it out on a small section to see if it looks alright first though.

You know what a painted up interior means to me? It's like saying:

"i dont know anything about how the car runs or anything, and i sure dont care to learn, but i have a lot of time on my hands and i sure am proud of my car."

It's even worse when its on an old car. It advertises "This is the best i can do!" Yea, its pretty, but you're still stylin' in a 10 year old car.

ciper said it all

No our interiors may not look fabulous, but for God's sake, don't make it look 10 times worse!!!

Edit: I just tried a quick photoshop in MS Paint on a small section by the steering wheel in maroon, like my car. Forget I ever said anything about painting interiors... It looked disgusting...

Please dont paint your interior. It'll look ghetto. Every time I see a car, even a civic, with a painted interior, it makes me think "hehe, his mom wont let him mod the car, so he paints the interior and puts a bigass chrome tip on his exhaust. Then it makes me want to give the person a door ding, but I then feel so sorry for the car, that I could do no such thing.

stick with wheels and tint. or if you MUST paint the int, tint your windows REALLY DARK.
