Differences between the N/A and turbo 5MT Trans?

Post by All_talk »

I’ve done a bit of searching but still have some questions. I know the turbo has a hydraulic through out and a stronger pressure plate/clutch disk. My proposed swap will put an EJ22T drive train into an older EA series car (RX), which has a cable clutch so it would be simpler to go with the N/A EJ tranny. I don’t mind converting to hydraulic, but assuming I can get a performance clutch for the N/A box what am I gaining for my hassle and expense?

Does the turbo box have different gear ratios? (What are the ratios?)
Is the turbo box stronger, i.e. shot peened gears and such?
They are both 3.9:1 final drive, right?

Educate me
Gary

P.S. What would be a good price on a solid used trans, N/A & Turbo (the swap donor I'm looking at had an auto)?

The turbo tranny has 3.90 final drive ratio, and the n/a tranny is 4.111.

You can get performance clutches for the "push" style clutches. So unless you really want to convert to hydraulic, I'd probably just get an n/a box and use the cable setup.

The pull type clutches found on the turbo trannies are better designed in my opinion....but that's just my opinion.

Hmmm... 4.11 in the N/A. Will the VLSD carrier fit in the 4.11 diff? Or the LSD from the EA cars (clutch type)?

The lower gears would be great for performance, but I wonder how badly they will effect commuting mileage?
