troubles in accessory odo install land, need help!

i tried to get an acces odo installed today at a shop here in town, as i dont really have the time to figure it out myself. I am using the Terratrip universal speedo cable probe that locks around the cable and send the signal. Issue is, it needs a 5v power source and they tried three different 5v sources on the engine today and the car wouldnt run properly or the odo wouldnt get a constant signal, so im guessing we need to find another source for a 5v signal. They tried the ECU and two other places.

Car is a 92 subaru legacy EJ22t turbo with Automatic transmission and needs the sensor to make the signal.

any suggestions as to what areas in the car to tap in to for a 5v supply of power to power the terratrip sensor? or is it not worth the fight and maybe better off to run a resistor that converts a 12v signal down to a 5v signal.

thanks in advance for any help!

If it draws low current, you can tap the MAP sensor power supply pin. That'll get you 5 volts.

If it's not very low-current, make a 5-volt power supply out of a 7805 voltage regulator chip from your local electronics supply store (or even Radio Shack). One pin goes to ground, one goes to a +12v source, and the remaining one supplies 5 volts. To smooth things out you probably should put a capacitor between ground and each of the other two pins, but it'll probably work anyway.
