Shifter blues
Ok i have been reading the site for about 4 hours trying to figure out what i need to replace my shifter.
I want to use the stock wrx with kartboy bushings. However i am not sure what all i need to buy. I assume that if i buy the entire WRX SHifter that includes the linkage?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... gory=33736
So all that i would need to buy would be the bushings and that adapter piece? Also i saw that there was a spring mentioned that keeps the knob between 3 and 4. Mine is sloppy as all hell in neutral so i assume i broke that spring? Maybe i just disconnected it.
Any help would be great.

If you buy the shifter on ebay, that's all you need except for the joint piece I talk about in my write-up.
The only exception to this is the bolt used to hold the shifter linkage to the joint. The stock bolt uses an axle type bolt. You can however just drill the smaller hole out to 3/8" and use a standard 3/8" bolt & lock washer. That's what I did.
If you know your spring is broken/missing, you should replace that as well.

Thanks Josh. I read all of the posts about that i was just a little confused as to what the linkage was. For some reason i had it pictured alot differently in my head.
I assume that is the problem with my shifter. One day it was fine the next it would flop back and forth to the left. The Right still has some stiffness. Any idea on the part number for that spring?

If you don't have the spring, the shifter will NOT return to center. I found out because I was curious one day.
If you want to clean up slop, simply replace your factory shitty bushings, with good ones.
I made my own rear bushing, and modded an Energy front bushing designed for a GD. The car shifts really well now.
I am going to try my hand at a super-hybrid shift linkage using the upper linkage from a 91 Legacy Turbo, and the lower linkage from the 94, and a custom cup washer and a modified shifter from a WRX. I will probably do that after I finish Matt's console.

What the shift lever sits in is what I would call the lower linkage, and the upper linkage is what attaches to the shift lever and is directly attached to the transmission shift linkage.

Hey if your online right now, What bushings need to be replaced in the stock wrx setup. The bushings that kartboy sells only includes two black discs that go on the lower linkage. Where is this rear linkage your're talking about. On the wrx shifter that shouldnt need to be replaced right?

Well, the stock rear bushing is soft, even in the WRX.
I made my own custom solid rear bushing (I made a post, just search for it in this forum with me as author).
No one that I know of makes a replacement for the rear bushing, so I dunno. The front Kartboy would probably be OK. I used an energy. One peice = less margin for flex. I like the Energy, and for 10 bucks, no one should be without it.

energy suspension makes one for the rear. I was talking with them a few weeks back when I was looking for bushings for shifter joint. I found out they did offer that rear bushing only.
