twin loop muffler?

I've never seen nor heard of this "twin loop muffler" before. Is the description of it increasing torque and power just hype or is there any truth to it at all?

I don't know about that, sounds a little fishy. They did use a Civic as the show car for it....

I can't see how it would be good for engine output (two 180-degree bends!), but it does seem like it would quiet things down nicely.

Yeah I don't really see any benefit. The space inside the muffler is essentially cut in half, since you have to have one portion for the exhaust inlet, and a bottom portion for the outlet.

With a standard muffler you use that area for baffling and what not.

So to be quite honest, in the end, I think the net result will be the same, if not worse in terms of power due to the bends.

Subaru used a similar setup on the 01-04 H6 outbacks.

I thought they used something like a valve in the muffler or piping that opened with pressure to help the motor breathe better at higher rpm.

Yes, basically it varies the effective length of the exhaust to change pulse tuning for high or low rpm. Same idea as a two-stage variable length intake manifold.
