My lastest Subaru...I've finally made it out of the 80's...I've been in a time warp. 92 Legacy Sport Sedan Auto...$100.00...won't start...coolant on plugs. Never heard engine run, would you buy used engine or try to fix existing. I think it has blown head gasket or warped heads, cause there is coolant on all 4 plugs. Kid I bought it off of said he had bubble in resevoir, but then his brother drove it last winter & it died on him...hasn't started since. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Buy a used engine - then you can fix your current engine at your leisure...

Buy a used engine, fix it up slowly then swap it into the car. Throw the old one away.

Sell your old engine (2.2L Closed Deck heads... WRX guys would drool).

Use that money to buy your "new" old one, or buy one completely rebuilt from mile hi.

Brat4by4: Why would WRX guys want these ej22t heads? My poll so far has indicated that I should buy a used engine.

He meant block... The EJ22T has a closed-deck block that WRX owners drool over.

don't get it

I still don't get it. Why would they want an old motor over there brand new 2.0 litre & what does closed deck mean :?:

Check out the tech articles at www.legacycentral.org Basically the EJ22T is the toughest engine Subaru has ever made. WRX guys drool over it because it has potential much, much higher than their EJ20T and more displacement. Closed deck is explained in one of the tech articles on there. Read that and if you have questions post em!

Note: Even new STI 2.5 L engine is only semi-closed deck. Look at www.i-speed.com products page and their $4650 engine package is probably a built up EJ22T block. And their 2.4 L block could be a bored EJ22 block? Their Mofo on the other hand is just sweet.

I had coolant in two spark plugs holes (with the spark plugs still in of course) The engine wouldn't run.
Why? 'cause the fluid was shorting spark's high voltage onto the engine block.
How did the fluid get there? from a leaking reservoir that's close/above the left side pair of plugs...
Once I replaced the res. and drained the fluid from the plug holes the engine run w/out loosing a beat.

The i-Speed guys are indeed using a 2.2L block for those packages. They're not bored, but rather stroked 2.2T blocks. They're amazing too!

I'd get a used engine since you've got all the wiring and such intact. It'll allow you to work on it at your leisure and then when you're ready, it'll drop in with little complications.

Thats exactly what happened! How did you drain the coolant out of head? I have coolant on plugs on opposite side as well :? Is it possible that coolant drained into passenger side head too?
