Had it installed Friday.
helix downpipe to qtp elec. cutout to stock exhaust (no cats).
It sounds almost stock closed and like hell on earth open
The turbo is noticably louder and spools quicker.
hopfully I can get it to a dyno in a few weeks to see the difference from closed to open.

Yeah I thought my dash was going to rattle apart.
And the wires are now tucked against the body and not hanging like in the pics.

I have been thinking about getting a cut out for a long time. I just might after this. I run Open downpipe about once a month or so, and I love it. Sounds so hardcore.

did you have to modify the downpipe at all? is there a noticable difference between open and closed? looks sweet!

The downpipe isn't modified except a small dent to clear the tranny pan.
It feels quiet a bit faster open but I'll have to leave it to the dyno to show how much of a difference.
Whats really nice is I can open it up just a little and have a really mean (but not to load) sounding exhaust.

So this is like some controlled TB for your exhaust? I'm not sure I understand what's going on here..

It's the same kind of butterfly valve as a throttle body, yes, though I'd imagine it's beefier. When the valve opens, it lets all the exhaust gas escape through the hole instead of having to go through the rest of the exhaust and muffler.

Oh.. so this is further up in the exhaust? I thought from the photo, that it was just before the muffler, or something...
Seems like a pretty good idea!

Yeah, it's right at the bottom of the downpipe.

The only way to increase the pressure difference across the turbo is a short dump pipe or no exhaust at all. But its nice to be legal (somewhat) when neccessary, which is nice with a cutout like that. I'm interested in the results. Pretty clean under carridge buy the way.

I was thinking about teeing into the downpipe close to the turbo but there isn't much room and a pipe would have to be made to dump the exhaust gas under the car. Which defeats the purpose of having the cutout close to the turbo.
It's clean because I'm always under them messing with stuff.

That's a nice setup, very clean. My future legacy will have something similar in order to maintain my sleeper status when I'm not running hard. It's gotta be fun for you to pull up beside someone at a stop light all quiet and then just open the cutout and blast off leaving them confused and deaf. Do you mind if I ask approx. how much it all cost?

I don't mind saying how much I paid.
helix downpipe = $250ish
y pipe and cutout = 189 + shipping
labor, gaskets & flanges = $120 (can cut this in a third if you can weld)
total = $560+/-
I pulled up to a 6 cyl. mustang with aftermarket exhaust yesterday
and opened the cutout. He kept looking around and couldn't figure out what car sounded so mean and I was sitting right next to him. Kind of funny people won't look in our direction even if we're right in front of them.

560's not bad at all. Lol, that's great.

I am just about to do this exact thing. I'm getting a Tsudo 3" bellmouth dp from ebay and putting the cutout right after it, I can't wait >:)
are there any issues with boost creep due to the open airedness of the exhaust system?

I have been thinking of doing this since I heard it on a local EJ20G swapped RS.

Very nice. I believe "Cheesefrog" was running one of these on his heavily modified Honda Bseries hatch when he spanked a dodge viper on a 40mph roll.

Looks nice!
Doesn't that turbo sound SO SWEET with her open! I love the sound of my DP uncorked and open!
HP gain or not....It's worth the money just to sound bad ass!
Where did you get the cutout?

A cutout has nothing to do with boost creep. Boost control and turbine housing design has everything to do with boost creep.

Maybe he means an increase in boost when its open due to the decrease back pressure???? Not really sure.

No, again, that's what a boost controller is for.
The wastegate will simply open to regulate boost.
