Any recomendations on dash kits?
I've looked at the metra 99-8900 but it looks like its a 1.5 face, which I don't really care for.
Thinking I may try the 1/2" DIN Pocket (88-00-9700)

That would probably work. Or just get a piece of that black plastic trim, and cut it to fit the opening below the stereo.

good call on the 1.5 din pocket, I'll check it out.

but damn none of the pockets or trays are useful at all. Everything in them dissapears when I use the skinny pedal. Have to retrieve my celly from the backseat

I bought a 1.5DIN pocket that was meant for a Legacy. It fit like a glove and matched my factory trim perfectly. It also shuts so stuff will not fall out. Personally the kits that Best Buy and Circuit City had looked horrible.

os where did you get your 1.5 din pocket/ is it the dealer one?
yes those install kits look like cheap crap.

I purchased it from a member on the forum. I'm sure you could get one from the dealer though.

I read the we don't need a trim ring, is that right?

I installed the stereo in both my Legacies.

In my old wagon, I just glued a piece of black trim under the stereo to fill in the gap.

On my SS, Opie already had an aftermarket stereo with 1.5 DIN pocket in it. Everything went together super easy. I have an aux in on my new stereo, so I just drilled a hole in the top of the pocket and ran the cord through.

Yeah, you don't need a kit or a shell. The stereo mounts "ISO-DIN" style, with screws.

I haven't needed an antenna extension in any aftermarket stereo installation on a Subaru so far...

does it screw in from the front or sides? ie can I just pull the front console trim as opposed to removing the side panels?

There are brackets that attach to the sides of the stereo (and storage pocket) with screws. These brackets are then mounted to the interior of the console with screws that go back into the console. It kind of looks like a cage.

So, if I recall correctly, to remove the radio you:

- Remove the cupholder by pulling it out, pressing on the tab in the middle, and pulling it off.
- Remove the ashtray by pulling it out, pressing on the tab exposed, and pulling it off.
- Remove the two screws exposed behind the cupholder
- Remove the two screws above where the ashtray was (use your fingers to feel for the heads and use a very short screwdriver)
- Pull the now-loose around-radio trim piece off
- Remove the six screws holding the radio's brackets into the car, being careful not to drop them inside the console
- Pull the whole cage assembly out (radio, pocket, and bracket), disconnecting the wiring harnesses.
