Horsepower

Post by su bar u guy »

:) Hi, I am new to this forum and have a couple of questions. How can I get more horsepower out of my 91 Awd legacy L automatic sedan without spending a lot of money? Also, I just bought a 91 AWD Legacy Turbo 5 spd Sedan. How rare are they? Is this considered a sport sedan?

For the L: K&N airfilter, chop out 1000lbs with a sawzall. Yes, turbo is sport sedan. You can do an unlimited number of things to make the sport sedan much much faster. Does 400 wheel horsepower sound good to you? They are very rare in mass-produced car terms.

UK turbo is listed at 197BHP. I believe the US ones are a bit lower - no intercooler etc. About 160?

yeah Nick, your right.

There is soo much you can do to this car. Do a search, too. There is soo much talk on this board about initial mods. Go with exhaust, intercooler, raise some boost up to 12 or 13 with a boost controller (only after an intercooler is installed). After that you'll need a fuel cut defender, so you can raise the boost a bit more. Then some fuel management and a bigger turbo to go with more power after that.

Initially you could remove the snorkus in the fender (look up snorkus removal), and maybe the throttle body bypass mod. That will raise your throttle response. Don't go with a cone filter, as the general concensus here is that they don't help out as much as we'd like and have some side affects. A good cold air intake, though, now that is a different story.

Yup 160 stock hp for North American models  But the car is so detuned from the factory that it is easy to make more hp without spending much money. But then again we got more displacement then oversea spec turbo's

Here I go.. I think the 91's don't look as good as the 92-94's. Not even close. I think they look good but the 92 up just do it.

I dont agree. Thats why I have 4 90-91, my mom has a 90, one co worker has a 90 and a freind has a 91. The 92 looks too much like a mix between a nissan and an acura (look around and you'll see which models Im talking about.)

They both have their pluses and minuses.

I love the 91's for their funky Japanese look. It is macho in a JDM way :D

I know people disagree...but I prefer the 91 front end...except for the crappy headlights...but appearance wise its better...with side (fender) markers from the 92-94...with the rear end from the 92-94, except for the legacy badge under the small rear side windows, thats one part of the 91 rear end style I would keep.
So, thats my dream car, 91 turbo with 92-94 rear lights, trunk, bumper, etc...and upgraded headlights...and the fiberglass gc style wrx bumper and hood....hahaha...I could go on and on.

I was under the assumption that my 92 5mt had a viscous coupled limited slip differential also. Am I wrong?

I like the 91 & the 92-94. I think they all look good.

I think the 91 was the only one to get the LSD. I have to say I love the 91 body style more than the 92 and up. Especially the front end.

Josh, there was a 91 up for sale down in Southern California. It was grey, I believe. It looked pretty nice. It wasn't that expensive either, I think the guy wanted 2500 or 3000 for it. I talked to him, thinking that my brother would want the car, but he can't afford it right now. He was on the yahoo group, but I don't think he ever offered it here. You want me to send you his contact?

you can send me his info......I sorta want to find a cheap one since I'd be canabolizing it to swap stuff into mine.

I don't care if it's wrecked, as long as the drivetrain is in good order, and the motor is rebuildable.

Well, back to the original thread topic.... Non USDM Legacy Turbos can run up to 14-15 psi stock before fuel cut off because of the intercooler. If you want to go sky high then you need a fcd.

I just looked it up in my 92 factory Legacy manual and it says all 5mt come with the viscous coupled LSD. So unless Subaru is lying I think some of you are missinformed, sorry.

The rare LSD people are talking about is the rear LSD.

All 5MT models have a viscous coupling in the center differential, but still have an open diff in the rear. Only some 1991 models got the LSD in the rear.
